Dakar, Prison Colony. Discovered to be inhabitable after the relocation of Capital Sector. First used as a mining planet in M39-40. After a few hundred years, the colonist's reported strange objects being seen all over. Dsimissed as hallceutions, untill 134 people where found dead. At a mine, A mass exodus was planned, but was struck by sabotage, after the death of nearly 15,500 and destruction of 5 transports. the ruling Lord called For an Imperial Regiment. After 15 years of waiting and 13 more similar tradegys, the Death Korps Of Krieg had sent 20,000 troops to area to help with the exodus. It was then, during a routin controlled mining explosion the articfact was discovered. A huge Monolith, with ingravings depicting the events of Horus Heresy from Chaos views. Inquistors rushed to seek its origins. 13 months Later, they air lifted it. Blaming on Chaos Cultist for its unburying. Upon the leaving of all Colonist's The Regiment itself became Tainted. The inquistors called for the Regiment, and all former colonist to be formerly executed to prevent the the excursion of Chaos. These events where to be forgotten, untill in M41, Survivors made there way to the surface. The Officer in command, ordered the units Priest to forgive the Emperor, for them, for his mistake. The surving few began the process of scavenging, for any thing. In the next hundred year, Imperial probes from the cruiser INDARGO started detecting surviors, numbering in the Thousands.

If you have more questions like in that first post, please PM Kage or the primary project leaders (like Minister or myself). You'll find information about the history of the sector in the Meta-thread, and you'll find more information about the Cursed subsector in this forum. Dakar looks potentially interesting, but there's a lot of questions and comments that come to mind. I hope you don't lose courage by this. 1) It's important that you do your best to write good English. As a Norwegian, I have difficulties myself, but I try to spend some time making sure that everything sounds ok. If we have bad English on the website... well, it's just not cool So watch those capital letters and various typos (and write numbers with words, like thirteen months instead of 13 months)! 2) Why was it discovered to be inhabitable after the relocation of the capitol SUBsector? 3) What kind of strange objects were reported, and why were they dismissed as hallucinations? 4) How were the 134 people killed? (or how did they appear to have been killed) 5) Same question for the 15,500 people. 6) Are you sure that Krieg is anywhere near the Anargo sector? If no, then please make sure. I think Krieg is actually close to Armageddon, which means they would have to travel a ridiculous distance to get here. 7) Why was there a routine mining explosion in the middle of the war? I don't think the miners would have continued mining under these circumstances. 8) How did the regiments from Krieg become tainted? 9) Why was all this forgotten? Sounds like quite important stuff. 10) Why is it now a prison colony? You'd think all the chaos stuff would make it off-limits, and that the Inquisition would be interrogating, examining and possibly executing any survivors. 11) This world doesn't seem to fit in with the cursed subsector. The subsector is, after all, off-limits.

Sorry about My english, i type way to fast. Well about those questions. It was dicovered inhabitable as they had ignored due to the Chaos tainting, dismissing it has a no-go area. The strange objects = Demons, All stuff Chaos really ( due to the Monolith ) Well the mine they where operating in was directly below the Monolith, so the Chaos taint was strong, Making them fight amongst 1 another or commit sucicide. Krieg, i dont no. Due to this i will change it to a local regiment if no minds. There was no war, the soldiers where only there as 'peacekeepers'. The explosion due to the Miners rush to extract all known resource's before the exodus. The regiments became tainted due to the pro-longed exposure to the Source. It was forgotten as it was an embarrasment to the Lords in control. Its now a prison colony as a planet was needed for such purpose. it was put there because no 1 could get of or on with out permission, so no escapes etc. And i did say it was on the fringes of the sector. sorry if i didnt make it clear

Sorry about My english, i type way to fast. You mean "too fast". Well, I think we'd all appreciate it if you would type slower, at least when it's something important It was dicovered inhabitable as they had ignored due to the Chaos tainting, dismissing it has a no-go area. You're saying that they knew about the Chaos taint and that it was therefore a no-go area? The strange objects = Demons, All stuff Chaos really ( due to the Monolith ) My impression if the Imperium is that they would not brush off such sightings as hallucinations. Indeed, they would probably be terrified by anyone claiming to have seen daemons, so I suggest you downplay it to something more insignificant. Strange lights, shadows, frozen water in temperate regions, etc. Well the mine they where operating in was directly below the Monolith, so the Chaos taint was strong, Making them fight amongst 1 another or commit sucicide. I see. Krieg, i dont no. Due to this i will change it to a local regiment if no minds. Not at all. There would be some sort of PDF anyway. There was no war, the soldiers where only there as 'peacekeepers'. Yes, but they were also there because many miners had died. In a very strange way. I'm just not sure they would just go about their business as usual. If they suspected a chaos taint, they would probably evacuate. The explosion due to the Miners rush to extract all known resource's before the exodus. Fair enough, I suppose. Greed is a powerful thing. The regiments became tainted due to the pro-longed exposure to the Source. Herm.... a bit unlikely in my mind, considering that it's 20,000 men, and that they'd figure something was off soon enough, but hokey. It was forgotten as it was an embarrasment to the Lords in control. Its now a prison colony as a planet was needed for such purpose. it was put there because no 1 could get of or on with out permission, so no escapes etc. I'm sorry, but I just don't buy this. All this stuff about history being forgotten in the strands of time and shrouded in mystery and secrecy is getting old, and this is something I definitely don't see being forgotten. Tens of thousands don't fall to Chaos without the Inquisition as much as getting a sniff of it. There will be questions. And i did say it was on the fringes of the sector. sorry if i didnt make it clear But is the cursed subsector on the fringes of the sector?

While I was a little put off at the beginning when first reading the idea, it has grown on me some what. As to the exact placement of the Cursed Sub-Sector or the Exact location of the Anargo Sector as a whole.....I'm not even certain. I agree with CELS, that it is important to find a reason why there would still be people on this rock. If it is a mining colony, perhpas it is mining a mineral necessary for building space ships or is necessary for the warp engines. Does anyone know if there are any rare elements or exotic metals required in the broduction of imperial warp drives? Even if the planet was tainted by chaos, the imperium might not be willing to give it up if they felt the risk outweighed. This would also help to explain why they use prisoners instead of your average Imperial citizen. The explosions and deaths might be attributed to actions by the Alpha Legion and maybe a chaos cult operating on the planet. The Alpha Legion attacks would be to disrupt the flow of the necessary material for ship construction. Instead of having a monolith with the Horus Heresy told from the point of view of chaos, perhaps having the story chisseled into the wall of one of the tunnels. The story would be too big for one monolith. The writing instead meanders down one of the long galaries. It is written over about a mile of tunnel walls, ceilings and floor, This subterranean world idea has some great possibilities. It reminds me alot of the long walk through the depths of Moria in Lord of the Rings. You may also want to look at the following links for some ideas of the long quier darkness that can be found in this underground labrynth. The following link is for the Wieliczka salt mines in Poland. It shows some of the amazing artwork that was created by the miners in their off hours. They have the gothic feel so prevalent in 40k and would probably be something that the prisoners would do to make their "home" more bearable. www.kopalnia.pl/english/galeria.htmPerhaps you could also have some of the deeper mines break into natural caves. Maybe this was previously a secret base for the alpha marines or the place that a chaos cult use to meet.

Destecado, thank you for your ideas. They are welcomed by me. I especially like your idea, replacing the Monolith with Tunnels, caves etc. Really suits the place. The idea of Mining for rare materials gives a reason for the mining still happening. The location of my planet, is to be decided. As im still trying to work out all minor hiccups in my ideas. I will reply when i re-work my background. If anyone could suggest a location for my planet, please do.

Glad to be of assistance. At the momont though you might want to leave the idea of rare materials pretty general. I know that alot of work has been done on eldar technology, but I'm not sure where we stand with regards to the Imperial technology or if the warp drives require exotic or rare metals. I'll bounce the idea of Kage and see what he thinks. Still it is a good reason.
I also see no reason why such a world could not be in the Cursed Sub-Sector. The idea of a clandestine mining opperation out in the middle of the sub-sector is quite agreeable. I have a listing of all of the worlds in the cursed sub-sector. If you can give me some more specifics about the planet I can probably find a system that fits the bill.
Also, being sent to Dakar should be a life sentence. No one who goes down to the planet can ever leave 9at least for prisoners) Perhaps the world is considered Perdita. Even the IG units sent their never leave. With that in mind, you might want to consider creating a penal legion as the IG troops. Also not everyone would work in the mines. They would need people to cook, work in the the atmosphere reprocessors, keep production schedules and other records, etc. This would mean that you have different levels of prisoners. Some can actually live pretty comfortable lives (even though they are still prisoners).
Perhaps an orbiting satelite or base from which the prison is monitored. I was thinking that perhaps the shuttles that carry the mined material to orbit are run by machine spirits to prevent any possible contamination by chaos. This also allows them to run the ships depressurized, detering prisoners from trying to escape in that manner.
If you get the chance, you might want to read "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlien for some idea of what it might be like.

I think that I have found a system that might fit the bill.
5,51,42 - M-V - A5918BC - B S 404 Im 910
It is a dry medium sized world orbiting a red dwarf sun. It has a dense tained atmosphere low in oxygen. The planet has a moderate population of approximately 100 million. It is run by a non-charismatic leader.....this can be the warden of the planet. It has an extreme law level (C) which woud fit with a penal colony. Tech level is B and it has a Scout base.
The scout base could of course be out of the orbiting facility around the planet. The system also sports two gas giants. No trade code is listed for the system which I feel makes it even more likely to be our system. You probably would not disclose any exports coming from a penal colony. the mperium would also probably try to hide the fact that they are mining a rare element.

Orbital distance: 0.5 AU Equatorial diameter: 7,787 Km Gravity: 3.72 m/s2 Orbital period: Length of day: 22.32 hours Standard Atmosphere: Tainted, Low in Oxygen Often huge areas of the planet experience violent dust storms. Winds reach speeds of up to 200 km per hour and dust billows up as high as 10 km into the atmosphere, turning the sky a deep pink. These storms may last for weeks. Surface atmospheric pressure: Surface temperature: 43 degrees Celsuis Hydrosphere: 33% ocean Life forms: Few life forms (wiped out during Imperial Cleansing ) other then Humans. Moons: 1, used for Defense and Planet Monitoring
Planet description: Dry, medium sized World, Similar in looks and size to Mars Government: Led by Un-charismatic leader, voted for by convicts. Ruling Council consist of the Lord's 5 most trusted men. Often descendants of orginal penal colonists. Extremly rare for outsiders to be voted in. Religion: Strict devotion to the Emperor amongst the council, amongst colonist's religion is less strict due to freedom allowed. Society and law: Extreme Law Level C Technology: Level B, consisting mainly of Mining equipment. Some militiary equipment for example Chimeras and Sentinels. Medical and Civilian tech is high, and mainly found in Mining complexes above ground. Trade and tithes: N/A Physiology: Mixed due to irregular Mix of Race's. Amongst Council members and other Convicts allowed above ground, the general appearance is a Dark Tan colour. Below ground a very white appearance is common. Psychology: Honour is strict, one must have trust and respect of others to be allowed in near proximity of Noble members of what society there is. Any new convicts often ridicule this, untill the force of his slave driver is felt. Language and dialect: Low gothic is hardly ever spoken off, unless to any offworld official. The more common language is an un recognisable version of Low Gothic. Planetary defence force: 100,000 strong, More of a Milita due to the 'regiments' appearance. Un-trusted by other convicts, but are proved in battle against cultist's. Similar in appearance to Savlar Chem Dogs. Not finnished, but it should help.

The government and religion need a little work. with the threat of corruption from chaos, I think they would quash any heresey early on. A strict adherence to the cult of the emperor would be required....of course most would probably pay lip service to it and beleive what they want.
The council is good for the day to day running of the different precincts of the mining settlements, but you may have a more imperial enforced government above this. Each community would be governed by an imperial Warder or warden. They mayhave constables as well as a trustee council reporting to them, but I don't see the imperium putting total control of the running of the facility into prisoners hands.
The Warden would represent the face of the Imperium to the inmates. He might preside over the trustee council or exercise a veto power in descisions that are contrary to Imperial policy.
Were you planning on having one large mining facility or multiple facilities?

I must also ask how much of those figures were pulled out of the air and how many were generated with the "Guide"? If using the Guide, the gravity of 3.72G (or thereabouts) is going to have a significant effect upon the physiology and health, i.e. the heart is going to find it difficult to pump blood around the body, etc. Just some quick thoughts. I was planning to have multiple facilities spread along the equator. Maybe about 15 tops -thats roughly 7 million prisoner in each facility- with some small outposts on the pole. About the figures, with me not understanding the planet generator, i based mine around the real planet MARS figures. I can change them in someone gives me advice. If any one can nitpick my idea, and gives reasons and suggestions please do.

Basing it around real-life figures is fine, but please remember that the goal of the Anargo Sector Project is to use the "Guide" to produce a consistent set of information for the various worlds. Do you have a copy of that document? The URL can be found in both the "News and Announcement" forum as well as "World Building" and, if you have any questions, you can find people who are more than willing to answer them in "World Building". My questions are more for consistency rather than complaining! As with Destecado, I find the world interesting... I'm wondering, however. How do you see Dakar fitting into the overall concepts of Sargassos given that it was originally described as a 'becalmed' area? I admit to be confused, however. Some of the subsequent comments seem to suggest 'stability' over 'becalmed'... but that's something for another thread, just thought that I would mention it. Kage

No, im sorry but i dont have a copy. I found the info by searching MARS on google. Sorry. Im glad some one finds my planet intresting, i have not managed to get the attention i predicted, i mean from multiple users. Well i personally consider it to fit with the sector what with the planet being continually Monitored, which could be by any authority. As no one can enter/exit the sector with out being detected it seemed fine as a prison colony. And with the planet being able to produce materials of certain value, it makes sense for at least one planet to be not 100% deserted. But with convicts instead of law abiding citizens, it wouldnt require more then a moments thought to have the convicts slaughtered if any major did arrise such as Chaos.

Well, Mars has a significantly lower gravity than ~3G, but there we go. All worlds within the Anargo Sector Project must be created using the guidelines found within the following thread here on ASP: (E.g. "Rules for Extended System and World Generation" aka the "Guide".) One must also understand that as present in the Sargassos subsector the world isn't going to have a sector-wide importance. The Sargassos subsector is becalmed, a part of the reason that it is thought of as the "Cursed Subsector", as well as some of its dubious history... I'm not entirely sure what you're suggesting with regards to the fact that the 'sector' (I presume you mean system) is constantly monitored and therefore cannot be altered, unless of course you're simply referring to extensive perimeter sensor systems, etc... On a personal note, taking a tad more time to format your posts would make it a bit easier to read. I can remember that you said you typed fast... <grin> It makes me remember what one of my teachers said about me in the past when it was required to take a 'typing exam': "... he types twice as fast as everyone else in the class, but unfortunately makes twice as many errors..." ;D Kage
