I want to ask vox populi about the opinions about possibility of change of sector’s boundaries. AFAIK, it was never clearly mentioned when the sectors were introduced. My present moment hypothesis is that sector were introduced after the Horus Heresy because only then the necessity of patrolling appeared. The Great Crusade was similar to Napoleonic wars, where armies could go and hit the destinated place or pass around the hard fortress. The space which was once passed through considered the imperial territory. Vast armies smashed any significant resistance due to sheer numbers so no guerilla fighter are left behind and no need in patrolling. So: - any proof of pre-Imperium existence on sectors?
- any agreement with the fact that in a hundred centuries the borders of sectors can change, some sectors engulfed by others?
- any other necessity in sectors except optimal space for patrolling?

I see it as an astrographic convenience only... Of course, I also am not advocating a history introduced which has Meksum and Anargo in two different sectors... Kage

Though zholud's ways would be more interesting in a way, I have no problem with fixed sectors. If you look at the map of the Gothic sector, for example, that looks pretty fixed to me.

I agree that it is an interesting proposition, but only worry that the introduction of such flexiblity would lead to the kind of violoation and fluidity that is the problem in the 'fluff'... Thus I'm rapidly close to saying "Thus sayeth the law..." Kage

Different stars move with different speeds, thus if sectors are fixed would this mean that some systems move in and out?

Do stars move fast enough for that to be a realistic problem, or is that like asking what will happen when the north american continent will crash into russia in a few million years, and how the borders between these countries will be affected?

Stellar drift would be a real problem if we're talking about millions of years, but in terms of the timescales that we're dealing with... no. And, again, for ease I'm just going to say that the borders are fixed. It saves a lot of hassle in the long run. Although your comments are going to obviously have an effect upon the War in Heaven timeline/history... Kage

If you wish real world fact – the three waves of Americas colonisation during Neolithic period was made by ground travel… just 9,000 BC IIRC As to movement – we have stars with coordinates of 1 (maybe even 0, have to see it) which needs to move 1 light year in 10,000 of the existence of Imperium. Thus speed for not is 30 km per second or less than speed of orbiting earth IIRC. Even if this is a dead end discussion, we may play around about concept of planets on the run, when some system enters/exit sector jurisdiction. Nice twist IMHO.
