Planet Description
The Coronis system is situated in the outer zone of the Dorvastor subsector, a fair distance from the subsector capital. It was been scanned by an Imperial probe a few times, but the probe’s sensors found very little besides ice. From the surface or from orbit, the planet appears to be one solid sphere of ice, the poles being of a slightly lighter shade to indicate their differing density. But the planet has an active core, and the heat from the core melts the ice only a few dozen kilometers down, and it is here, beyond the reach of simple Imperial detectors, that a great secret unfolds. Coronis is actually home to a watchpost of the ancient alien race known as the Atlanteans. The origins of these water-dwelling warriors are unknown, but it remains that they maintain a small base on Coronis, to keep an eye on that area of space.
In appearances, Coronis is unimpressive. Much of its surface is water, subsequently frozen over by the very low temperatures. A few medium-large, snow and ice-covered islands dot the equator, generally only a thousand kilometers or less across. The eight seismic plates mean that there is a respectable amount of seismic activity, but earthquakes are kept to a minimum by the near-total lack of transversing faults. The icy layer makes the planet a dazzling sight from space, as the millions of ice crystals refract incoming sunlight every which way. Above the ice, it is bitterly cold, but the deeper you get below the water, the warmer is actually becomes, due to core heat. This still does not rise above a few degrees Celsius, but it is enough to keep the water liquid. Native life consists of only a few species of single-celled and multi-celled sea creatures, along with a very limited selection of aquatic plants that have adapted to subzero temperatures.
System Details]/i]
The system that Coronis orbits in is almost completely barren, Coronis itself being the only planet with any sort of life or even capable of supporting it. Two tiny, airless planets occupy the innermost orbits, followed by Coronis itself. An asteroid belt follows, with three gas giants and another asteroid belt orbiting at the outer limits. The giants are the only planets in the system with moons, a number of them each but all none being more than captured asteroids. This complete lifelessness only helps to keep the system out of the eye of the local Imperials.
Government
The residents of Coronis follow the standard Atlantean procedure for electing leaders of a small colony. A handful of Tidemasters are elected, currently numbering 20 or so, each overseeing the day-to-day operation of a portion of the city. Four Currentmasters are elected to instruct the Tidemasters, one Currentmaster for each quarter of the city. The four Currentmasters choose and answer to the colony’s Seamaster, who commands from his fortified residence in the center of the city. Since the colony is a small one, only a single Seamaster is elected, but he/she is still accountable to the people for their actions.
Religion
The standard and only creed of worship on Coronis is that which all Atlanteans follow, that of the Five-Faced God, Moranon. Sala’Moranon and Sulu’Moranon are much in evidence, as always. Also, a significant portion of the population pays some sort of tribute to Moranon’yere, the Face of Peace, as it is his hand that shields the watchers on Coronis from the eyes of the Imperium. Most Atlanteans are kept from terrible violations of law and moral codes by their fear of the Judgment, their belief in what comes after death. According to belief, at the Judgment you are judged according to what you have done in the course of your life, the good and the bad, and how you have affected the balance of the galaxy. Your sentence in the Judgment determines where you go after, those who led a bad life being doomed to the Atlantean equivalent of H**l, others being allowed into paradise, some forced to remain as spirits to suffer the agony of the results of bad decisions in their life, and some allowed reincarnation as a chance to begin again and redeem themselves.
Society and Law
Atlantan society on Coronis, the civilian portion at least, is rather muted due to its watchpost status and its low population. But what there is, is typical of Atlantean culture. Many of the people grow or raise food in contained compartments, with temperature-controlled waters. The rest perform other basic tasks necessary for the planet to remain self-sufficient for the times when it cannot maintain contact with the homeworld. Atlantan laws are not overly restrictive, but their moral codes are very strict and it is unusual to find one who commits crimes repeatedly. Thefts are quite rare, only those driven to madness or desperation steal from others, or those uncaring of the consequences at the Judgment. More serious crimes, such as murder, are almost unheard of. Crime is just as much of a problem on other planets in the empire, but Coronis is a relatively small planet and it is difficult to hide if you have broken the law.
Technology
Atlantan technology is of great quality, though on backwater (no pun intended) planets like Coronis, the best technology is reserved for military use. Transportation is facilitated in a range of small, submarine-like pods that run on hydrogen, an element easily obtainable from water with little effort. On the rare trips they make above the water and ice, for various reasons, the pods are also equipped with a low-power antigravity device, a smaller version of that mounted on their war vehicles. Atlanteans are warm-blooded, not at all suited for subzero temperatures, so when sited on planets such as Coronis, they almost never venture outside their contained living units. Only if needed will they do so, and only wearing heated suits similar to the bodysuits they must wear to survive above water. They grow their food, both plants and marine organisms, in special structures isolated from the outside chill and heated to a preferable temperature for the life inside. The primary focus of technology on Coronis is for information gathering, including a series of massive telescopes concealed in the polar caps. Technology in the Atlantean empire at large is around 13-14, close to the limit of Imperial forgeworlds, but it is rather lower on planets far from the busy centers of Atlantean control. Coronis in particular is rather isolated, and so has a TL of 11.
Trade and Tithes
For obvious reasons, Coronis does not pay tithes of any sort to the Imperium. Much information is collected through its telescopes and sensory devices, and stored until the routine data transfer period arrives, when the collected information is transmitted to a waiting probe that relays it to the more populous planets.
