After this post only one person may reply to this thread: Insidious Threat, the designer of the Vaeloni. Any posts made by another individual will be summarily deleted. I will not even read it to see if there are extenuating circumstances. From this point it is also the responsibility of the species/race creator to edit and, yes, delete posts in this thread. Posting the information time and time again will not be allowed. Simply delete the old information and repost the new. For that reason I suggest that you keep an appropriate file with all the appropriate UBB codes in it to prevent any trouble or heartache in the future. *Takes a bow* Thankyou Kage . In the light of all of the recent changes that have occurred with the image of the Vaeloni ,they have changed a little bit to fit in with it, but other than that they are going as well as they ever have been..... Enough of this though... on with the overview .The Vaeloni - Species OverviewAppearance and BiologyThe Vaeloni are a bipedal mammalian race, reminiscent of terrestrial canines in many ways, but wholly divergent in most aspects of their evolution that are not apparent to anyone just looking at them. Standing at an average of 6 feet in height, they are slightly more heavily muscled than humans, but this is only due to lifestyle, and they mass at roughly the same muscle mass as a catachan male of conscription age. This is the same for males and females, who have the same basic biological profile beyond their reproductive organs (and some chromosome differences similar to the XY and XX variation in humans). Vaeloni skin is brown to black in colour, and is slightly oily, from a chemical 'sweat' that is secreted as an antiboitic and sensory enhancement (giving them better awareness of environmental factors such as weather and heat). They have a mane of fur, usually white or sivler, extending from the crown of the head down to the tip of the tail, along the spinal column and extending a little way on either side. This is usually braided into a variety of styles, and this is actually a sign of social and familial standing, and one is able to tell the size, prospertity and deeds of a Vaeloni and his family from such braids. They have long snouts, ending in a 'bottle-nose' curve, with no sign of nostrils or other such olfactory organs visible on the surface. Inside the snout, they have a gel-sac, which is actually the way in which they are able to smell their prey/enemies/other life in general. The skin on the top front of the snout is more oily than most of the body, and is semi-permeable to any vapourous chemical dissolved within the oils on the organ. The gel suspends these particles, which the nerves saturating the gel interpret into a sense of smell. This is an incredibly sensitive part of Vaeloni biology, possibly the most sensitive part, and it is capable of discerning more smells than even Eldar and Kroot are capable of sensing. Just below this is the mouth, which is well equipped with teeth that are clearly defined for rending meat and hunting, betraying their carnivorous habits to all who see them. One of the more interesting facets of the Vaeloni is the way in which they see. Due to the swings between daylight and pitch black on a seasonal basis, they have developed several means of locating prey and predators, and staying out of harm's way. They do have a normal pair of eyes, that are sharper than human, but only capable of perceiving tone, not colour, leaving them colour blind. This does not hamper them though, as their secondary 'sight' is based upon a pair of pits either side of the eye cavities, about and inch and a half back on the skull to either side of thr eye-sockets. These organs look like tiny red orbs, inside a mass of wrinked, black skin. They are actually incredibly heat sensitive organs, that interpret thermal signiatures into visual form at close range, and give a hazy impression of the amount of life there is in an area, based upon the ambient heat that is not felt through the skin of the Vaeloni. This is due to a series of complex cognitive processes on an instinctive level, which equalise out all extraneous factors such as ambient heat. This is acheived through making the visual interpretation given by these sensory organs take the factors felt through the less heat sensitive nerves in the creature's skin into account, to screen such 'background' factors out. The last of their sensory organs on the head is their ears. These have a typically canine look to them, but they are actually there to serve two purposes. The fur mane extends to the bases of the ear flaps, lining them with a soft, yet semi-rigid fur layer. This can be used to detect variations in air pressure around the base of the ear, thus determining the intensity of sound as well as the general direction that it came from. The ear itself is more developed than that of a human, and is directed at tracking sounds of varying frequencies, right up to the lower end of the ultra-sound spectrum. Thus ends the Basic overview of Vaeloni Appearance and Biology... More Soon!

New post for a new topic - I will be doing this so that i will be able to add more to each section with more effeciency, and so that you are able to just go to the relevant post rather than trawling through lots of prose in each section The Origins of the Vaeloni - Early Evolution and the Rise to SentienceNestled in a cluster of young stars, near the galactic south east, the world that was to become the home of the Vaeloni was formed. Millions of years of tectonic violence, impacts and the eventual condensation of air-moisture into water saw the barren magma world of pre-historical Vaelos slowly turn into an arid desert world, with a single ocean dominating one side of the Planet. It was in this continent sized sea that the first life began to form on this planet, small protozoa, strains of bacteria and simple bottom feeding plant-like algae quickly colonising the once, sterile sea-bed. Natural selection was harsh, due to the extended periods of eclipse which the largest of Vaelos' moons inflicted upon the planet annually, and many of these early life forms were driven to extinction, due to the evolution of much deadlier strains of single-celled predators. Thus the dance of evolution carried on for countless ages, following a similar pattern to that process found in the history of almos tevery species in the galaxy, until the first motile life forms walked onto the lush banks of the World-Continent. These simple grazers and amphibians eventually gave way to creatures dedicated to a life on the surface of the planet, and thus the proto-Vaeloni were born, simple quadrupeds the size of a rat, which thrived by living upohn insects and the carrion of the larger grazers that dominated the surface of the world. Then came the turning point. The domination of the large grazer's came to an end in a few short years, due to one cataclysmic event. An asteroid of roughly three miles diameter, composed of Iron and amillions of tonnes of water-ice streaked through the atmosphere, impacting just below the northpole, on the centre-line of the world continent. The tidal wave of vapour incinerated almost everything on the surface, the water of the single ocean roiled under the strain of the tectonic activity spirred by this violent event, and the only creautres that survived were those underground in the more tectonically stable areas of the planet, or those that kept to the deepest reaches of the ocean. Within the decade, the darkness, frigid cold and impending ice-age that afflicted the planet had killed off the dominating life forms, as their food sources had all been killed, and they themselves had hardly enough population to maintain a viable genepool. The Proto-Vaeloni on the other hand had a distinct advantage. They had developed the ability to remain active during the extended periods of darkness that the primary moon caused upon the surface for a third of the annual cycle. This actually led to their survival, although many of them died due to the extreme cold, and only thsoe living in the southern parts of the planet were possessed of enough fur to stay warm during the centuries of fridig weather and sweeping snow storms that ravaged the majority of the planet. Almost a thousand years later, the proximity of Vaelos to it's sun, and the dissolution of the global dust clouds that had been kiced up by the impact, contributed to a slow increase in heat, and the melting of the ice that had been covering the planet for so long. Not only that, but the formation of three more seas, connecting with the World-Ocean that had originally been the only source of surface water on the planet, was slwoly occurring as the nation sized ice-floes and tundra slowly melted. This process was to take over ten thousand years to completely finish, but by the end of it, there had been a marked change in the development of the Vaeloni as a species. The tiem spent in an ice age had been gruelling, but not nearly long enough for any real changes to become noticeable in this still primitive race, but they had increased in size and musculature, their fore-paws having developed a more flexible 'dew claw' that could be opposed to the rest of their claws for grapsing their prey. Their Infra-red sensory ograns were more developed due to the harsh natural selection that had occured in the last ten millenia, and they had become effecient pack predators, although they still preyed on creatures that were smaller than them for the most part. Almost all of these evolutions were mere progressions on earlier biological traits, but they had been exaggerated vastly by the neccessity of the times. The slow climatic change had shattered the continental desert forever, as the three new oceans promoted a weather system that allowed monsoon seasons to quickly erode the sedimentary remains of the ancient asteroid impact, creating vast canyon realms and mountain ranges. The prot-Vaeloni stayed in their southern region of relatively gentle hills, but the more temperate climate had spurred the formation of massive ranges of forest. Within the space of a relatively climatically stable several million years, the development of the Vaeloni would change the planet forever... That is it for the proto-Vaeloni, next we go to when they had become bipedal, and a much more vicious hunting species, with explanations as to thsi development... suggestions are very welcome, as i want to know what people think of the dew-claw/opposeable thumb link... In the relevant discussion forums of course

Origins of the Vaeloni - Post Quadrupedal Evolution and the Rise to Sentience Pt.2
Millions of years after the above developments, the vaeloni had risen to become the dominant predator in their corner of the world. Their forest bound existence had added a whole new dimension to their existence, not only coudl they live in their dens and burros, hunting across open ground during the night, they could now navigate the trees to a limited extent, and thus began the development of their dew-claws to a fully opposeable digit.
The hind limbs of the species had become the main method of walking, and they were fully bipedal, although they would still revert to their quadrupedal stance for balance and tracking occassionally. A simple stoneage culture had energed, and soon they were using simple tools to care a more effecient living in their carnivorous pack-families. The culture of the species was incredible primitive, but they did have a basic heirarchy and spiritual existence, based on Idol worship of Spirits that they beleived inhabitted the world around them, suffusuing their every action and making sure that they prospered as a species. Pack Alphas would double as religious leaders and conduits to the spirit world, and he/she would have to lead all of the rites that the pack-family went through to mark special events and celestial phenomena.
Unlike many species, this culture was not dominated by one gender or another. This was due to the similarity of Male and Female Vaeloni biology, to the point where gender plays no part in muscle mass and strength. All members of the race, despite their gender, are born with the ability to potentially be just as strong as any other memeber of the species, and it was only when in the latter stages of Pregnancy or early Motherhood that female Vaeloni stopped their independant lifestyle for any length of time. This quickly reverted to normal after less than three years, due to the young age at which the Vaeloni reach puberty, and the shift into their adult life following soon after. Thus Vaeloni society was free of the many gender tensions and dominance issues that plagued other species throughout the galaxy, and as they lacked the ability to entertain philosophy at this point, there were not spiritual arguments to consider beyond venerating the spirits that protected them.
This stoneage state did not last for long. The population levels soon became intolerable as soon as a rigid social system was emplaced, and conflict quickly engulfed the species, as families fought for what they could in the way of hunting grounds and spiritually significant areas. Their mentality had evolved to entertain more complex ideas, but they were still centred around the daily battle for survival, and war soon became one of these concepts.
Guided by their 'Spiritual benefactors' the Vaeloni soon found that the harder, shining rocks that they had found and worshipped in the past were a 'gift' that they were able to shape using fire, forming the first blades. This transition occurred within a matter of millenia, only taking two and a half thousand years to form an arsenal of deadly blades and hooks, all designed to shed Vaeloni blood in the name of supremacy. The smaller and weaker pack-families were uprooted by the stronger packs, and these fractured societies moved to the fringes of the forests, seeing the flat lands and hills for the first time in and age.
Here they set up a more nomadic way of life, while the forest still ran red with the blood of the small empires forming in the wake of organised worship and theological/philosophical ideals. Within the space of four hundred years of the exodus to the plains, the nomadic Vaeloni had formed a more accepting culture, based around families working towards goals for a greater society, although there was still alot of inter-pack tension, although this was directed by tribal elders to maintain a productive and competitive atmosphere. Calling themselves the Rhan'Khrashi, these nomads formed a seris of small settlements along coastlines, to make sure that they were able to take shelter during the colder months, or when the weather turned against them.
Within the forests, a domain had been carved out in the name of a new god, being worshipped by the so-called Vael-Rhanui (Chosen of Vael). Several opposing clans had been converted without threat of warfare through the likness that this god had to the Vaeloni, and the fact that it embodied many of the facets of the species - especially their lust for knowledge and survival at all costs.
This single deity did not replace their other patron spirits, but it did quickly become the eader of all of their pantheon, and an established religion within the Forest realms of the Vael-Rhanui Purges were uncommon though, as they merely saw non-beleivers as lesser beings, and thus below their notice, although they would not underestimate teir abilities. This mentality helped them more than anything else, as converts from the few remaining strongholds of the 'Old Faith' flowed into the Grove Shrines of Vael, wanting to be blessed by the god who was said to be ll that Vaeloni should aspire to be.
The relative stability that followed the first wars led to many social developments, such as the nomads of the plains settling in the largest of their coastal cities, and starting a profitable trade in rare materials and fish to the forest dwellers. Weapons technology, and almost everything material ground to a standstill, as the true nature of the species, Vael and all of the other deities became the question asked by their race, an interest in the stars emerging when they looked to them and knew that their Gods looked down upon them with proud eyes.
Iron weaponry and tools became common when the Vael-Rhanui started to cut away at the forest around them to make more room for their burgeoning Grove Temples and growing cities, which were moving ever groundwards from the trees as they realised that their numbers and technological advantage rendered few predators dangerous enough to warrant hiding from. The technology quickly passes into the hands of the plains dwellers, as tey trade their own skills in cartography and artistry, which interests the followers of Vael intensely, as they feel that they should start erecting temples and palaces in honour of their one true god, the god of all gods.
Next Up - The development of the Vaeloni into an exploring culture, and the formation of their first true continent spanning Empire

The Origins of the Vaeloni - Rise of a Nation (Part 3)
With the invention of Iron weaponry and tools, and the foundations of a centralised Pantheon based religion being perfected by the scholars and philosophers of the Vaeloni race, the Vael-Rhanui looked towards the coast with hungry eyes and jealous hearts. Although they held most of the resources that could be used to build a functioning nation, times were hard for them, and the vclimate in which they lived was not as fertile as that of their Coastal neighbours. The open plains also held many seams of rare materials and fine silks could be made from the natural bounty of these regions, but yet they were neutral territory, or taken by the more nomadic of the Coast dwellers...
The religious differences between the two cultures were also pulling apart the tenuous agreements that they had on sharing such resources, and the Vael-Rhanui had moved many regiments of their finest warriors to the coastwards border, feeling that they may be able to take advantage of their military superiorty without too much resistance from the coastal capital city.
When the next dark season (a season of pitch darkness created by one of the planet's moons falling into sync with the sun's rise and fal lin the sky) came, the Vael-Rhanui were ready to strike, and they moved all of their most potent military resources up to attack from the plains, and cause the fall of the coastal capital Shen'Surash. This city was a major locus of trade, but it also lacked defences, as it was more or less the result of centuries of nomads unpacking and never moving on. This also worked to the advantage of the citizens though, as they were able to spot the onlcoming Vael-Rhanui elements and warn the Elders of the situation developing out on the outlying farming settlements. This resulted in a single envoy with a small bodyguard being sent to the Vael-Rhanui with a simple message: "Do not fight us for he shall turn his hand against the infidels."
The Vael-Rhanui took this as a grave insult, feeling that the envoy was impuning their standing with their core God, and the envoy barely escaped with his life, only the words of the generals of the army preventing his execution on the grounds of honour. Positions were drawn up, and the Vael-Rhanui moved incendiary catapults and stone throwers into position, to break up the few areas of resistance that thye expected to meet. When they felt that all was in place, and making sure that none of the citizens had managed to saly out of the city into the wild lands, the bombardment began.
The usual pitch darkness of this season was lit with the burning of canvas and wood as buildings and obstacles went up in flames due to the volatile bundles of oil soaked rags were ignited and hurled through the air at the defenceless populace. Many died due to the fumes given off as huge sections of the city burned, and the morale of the soldiers broke in the face of such a bombardment, many regiments attempting to withdraw into the only stone keep within the confines of the city after seeing the devastation wreaked on the less well built parts of their home-town.
After several hours of this bombardment, Vael-Rhanui soldiers started to enter the city in loose formation, slaying all that still lived in the name of Vael. They made straight for the central keep, easily slaughtering the regiments that were trying to fall back into the stone fortress. The gates were lowered and barred, preventing further access to the castle, but the seige weapons of the Vael-Rhanui moved inexorably towards the castle, and the defenders knew that they would burn, or face the wrath of the enemy footsoldiers.
With their destruction at hand, the defenders rallied to face their doom, and with a griom determination, they stood their ground on the wallls, their weapons ready to mete out death to al who opposed them. But before a single arrow was fired, and before a single drop of blodd was split in this final battle, the attackers ceased their advance.
Looking to the gates, they saw that a single Vaeloni male was making his way out of the castle towards the enemy. His bretheren shouted at him to return, but it seemed that he could not hear them, as he carried onwards to what seemed to be certain death. Stopping a mere fifty meters from the enemy battle line he called out the general of this force, calling upon hsi faith in Vael to show himself and account for his actions.
Even though thsi stranger showed no respect or fear, and this insult would have benn met with death in any other case, not a single member of the battleline struck him, or made to draw their weapons. They just stood, and looked questioningly at one another, not knowing what to do in the face of such stoicism. The leader of the invasion force, no less than the High General of the entire Vael-Rhanui military, stepped from the throng of soldiers, his personal guard stepping before him with glaives raise incase of an assassination attempt.
In the pitch darkness, the parley between the two individuals would have gone unnoticed, the constant eclipse preventing human sight from perceiving anything, but the heat sight of the Vaeloni meant that all could see what was going on down on the ground, and they could tell that there was a productive, and seemingly peaceful exchange going on between the two.
Vaeloni legends say that thsi was the first act of Vael in the earthly plane, to set his worshippers on the path of the righteous, not the path of the fanatic, but others say that this being was actually the physical form of Vael, and the All-Seer, the first of the Vaeloni psykers and the very being that defines their culture to this day.
Within several hours of meeting with the High General, the stranger had negotiated an uneasy truce. It was never noted what was said by both of these potent individuals, but it is true that there waas a deep respect between the two, and that they had laid the foundations for cooperation between the two tribe nations.
When the sun was again revealed from behind the concealing body of the moon, the attackers had withdrawn, and the Vaeloni that had negotiated all of this turned to the defenders and promised them that they were now protected against such an attack from their own kind for all time. The rebuilding effort began, but work forces from the forests of the Vael-Rhanui came to help, bringing timber and other materials to aid in the reconstruction. This was an unprecedented move. All the while, the coastal vaeloni had started a shift to a variation of the cult of Vael, coming to beleive that this stranger was infact a messenger, the first of a new breed of Vaeloni that was intended to be able to guide the Vaeloni into a new level of existence. Although the stranger never said as such, he has wisdom and power that was undeniably accurate and potent, and thus was he branded as a messiah, without so much as a nod or denial on his part.
During the span of his life, the All-Seer showed the Vaeloni the ways of seeing the future in some fashions, as wel as teaching them the ways of harnessing such powers. It is notable that it was only after the appearance of the All-Seer that the Vaeloni began to exhibit any kind of psychic skill, and it is only in numbers that their powers become potent. Whe n on their own, they are merely latent seers, with the ability to feel the thoughts of others and guide the future in a very limited and pragmatic fashion. In large groups (30 or more) they were capable of ALPHA level psychic feats, although at this stage in their history, it was not possible to get that many banded together without depleting an area of psykers immediately.

The Origins of the Vaeloni - The Species Ascendant (Part 4)
With the passing of the All-Seer a new order had been established. The Psykrs that had followed in his wake has started to become a much more common part of the species, becoming advisors and being put to work orchestrating the furute paths that the race may take. Because of their instinct to bad together in packs, soon groups of Vaelono Psykers, known only as the Dae'Shen'Vael (lit. Children of Vael), were roaming the land, directing the rise of a new nation as the old boundaries fell and the words of Vael's true message started to become the dogma of the entire species.
Within the century, the first forays across the ocean had started, though fruitlessly at first. At this point, the relative isolation of the Vaeloni in their pre-history meant that the only competition on other isles and continents came from indeigenous life forms. Their species had all be crammed into the one small space by the environmental apocalypse that had allowed them to rsie to sentience, and so they came across no creatures that could match their unique sentience and skill using tools.
Two millenia passed, with the Vaeloni entering an expansonist, peaceful stage, mimicing Classical Rome, aside from the maintenance of a Senate-like government. The Psykers still maintained a guiding presence, but they had no interest in ruling over the species, as they were driven to travel and spread their wisdom in the groups of threes that they had become traditionally inclined to form. A highly spiritual and driven culture was formed, and all looked as if it was going to go well for the Vaeloni, with their souls committed to their single goal of ascension in the eyes of their Gods.
Millenia passed (the equivalent period in human history is now the Golden Age of Technology, just nearing the tail end of initial human expansion. The last paragraph occured at roughly M.16... the time line is still under construction) and the Vaeloni successfully meshed their metaphysical arts with their scientific endeavours, sending their first 'probe' into space. This probe was totally unlike any technological device, as although it consisted of a rudimentary logic engine and motors to drive it, the core of the device was a beautifully crafted gemstone of unknown origin. This probe was designed to be an anchor for the vision quests of the Vaeloni Psykers, allowing them to push their minds beyond the boundaries of their world, and into space, seeing through the 'eyes' of the device and reporting what they saw.
This act was unprecedented, and many theories were made as to what would happen if one went on a vision quest that far outside of what they thought was the centre of existence (Vaelos, their homeworld). The results were beyond the wildest dreams and worst nightmares of the Vaeloni. The first attempts did well, the first few decades of probing showing that they were not the only planetary body in the system, but that theirs was the only life bearing world. But the further that the probe got from Vaelos, the less their racial consciousness and beleif in their Gods protected them, and the more they felt the dark pull from an as of yet unknown energy, all around and within reality, but yet not a part of it by any law of nature.
The first sign that something was wrong was when one of the Pack-Families of Psykers projecting to the device turned on each other in what was described as An unimagineably horrific act of fratricidal cannibalism. Their attendant guards, usually merely tasked with guarding them against outside distractions, were forced to turn their weapons on the poor creatures, shooting them with primitive projectile weapons and burning the corpses upon the orders of the senior Vaeloni within the Temple.
The Age of Fear had begun, and many started to lose their faith in the supremacy of their one true God, as the stories of evil spirits and gods capable of taking over the bodies of the gifted ran rampant through the dens and cities of the Vaeloni...
All vision quests to the probe were stopped immediately, pending a review of the events that had unfolded. Upon analysing the psychic energies remaining within the meditation chamber, the Temple's inhabitants found that their bretheren had become hosts for a different entity entirely, something that radiated pure malice, and which had not died with the deaths of it's hapless pawns, but which had merely been banished from whence it had come. The over whelming desire for pain and suffering caused many of the Vaeloni to leave the chamber in digust and fear, and the entire Temple was put on alert, all Psychic activities halted and al members undergoing rigorous screening to make sure that this was an isolated incident.

The Origins of the Vaeloni - The Age of Fear & The Expansion (Part 5)
The discovery of warp entities was not able to be suppressed for long, and soon radical elements in the Psyker circles of the Vaeloni had started to form fringe groups, some of them promoting diabolical worship of these entities in the hopes of gaining knowledge, pwoer and most of all, security. Other groups among the non-psyker populace started to form fringe cults of culling and 'purifying' all psykers. Although this did not lead to the collapse of their society, it did result in progress grinding to a halt for over two centuries, as the established order and primary faith in Vael as their one true god, struggled to stave off a tide of fear, superstition and boundless psychic potential. And so it was that the Council of Vael was formed, to provide a sounding board for the opinions of the major, non-fanatic elements of the Vaeloni species and to regulate the actions of their race.
The creation of this council was slow and fraught with danger, however. Minor warp-powers, intend on securing the worship of a psychicaly active, but vulnerable species, had flocked to the minds of the less controlled psyker packs, turning many of them into silver-tongued manipulators, demagogues and mass-murderers. Through the efforts of the uncorrupted, the small instances of deivancy were wiped from the face of thr primary continent, the most successful and resourceful of the radical or tainted groups feeling across the oceans to set up their own small communities away from the re-established Vael worshippers. Many freedoms that the Vaeloni had enjoed since the beginning of time had to be clamped down on after the discovery that too much wanton psychic potential, and uncontrolled emotion could lead to the manifestation of warp-enetities, but they still retained a semblance of their former heirarchical democracy, allowing the people to have thei say, although now the Psychic potential of the race was formed into a rigorously trained Theocratic elite.
As soon as the more deviant elements of their society had been cast out, the Vaeloni race looked to progress once more, the probe having been declared a danger to their race. If they wanted to see tha stars, their leaders told then, they would have to walk among them. Thus the species turned it's fanatical desire for exploration to the creation of technology once more, expanding from their rennaissance levels of technology to create the tools that they could use to try and expand into new realms of knowledge and existence.
The Age of Fear, though slightly diminished, was still very much present, and there was still a reckoning to be had with the fringe elements of their society that had fled from the all seeing eye of their Council those few centuries back.
