So the crystal layer might have formed on top of the saline ocean, but because it would rain alot on a water world it is now under a layer of fresh water, i'm thinking a not to thick layer. I would like it near the surface so it can be a recognisable feature.
The thinking behind that idea, and it may be flawed, was that you would be able to walk on it, you would have to keep moving though or you would sink.
I also had in mind the properties of a certain plastic, not sure what its called but when you apply pressure the structure of it alters and it changes colour, like rainbow ripples, it seemed like a cool idea at the time.

Yes indeed, but would they not seek to somehow harness that power rather than waste it by dumping it in the sea, massive lightening bottles if you know what I mean.
Like the human body uses electrical impulses, would this be the equvalent of blood for them then. It also seems they would be in a constant state of reproduction if electrical charge was the catalyst for growth. It could be a different form of crystal, one that is harvested for its strange properties, it could even be a silicon version of a more evolved species
