To understand the Sargassos Subsector of the current 40k era, it is important to understand how it existed before the Imperium of Man arrived. this thread will be used to examine ideas for the Age of Strife Era Culture (ASEC) and other planetary societies that existed in the sub-sector and how they interacted with the rest of what would become the Anargo Sector.
The following was the beginning of an idea for a culture that might serve as a template for the ASEC.
The Mezzan
The name Mezzan is ancient. It come from a long dead culture. It means to measure. The belief is that a person should be judged or measured by their actions and deeds rather than by their breading or race. The Mezzan culture is very egalitarian.
Most can not truly be said to be human. They are hybrids part machince part living tissue. There are even those among them that come from non-human races. The Mezzan beleive that what defines a "human" is not his genetic or physical makeup, but a beings ability for rational thought and reasoning.
The Mezzan are militant pascifists. They believe in the sanctity of life, but will go to great lengths to impede those that infringe on the rights of others. They will exhaust all other possibility before considering violence against another. This is one of the reasons that they contacted the other worlds around them.
Their hope was to make the need for violence unnecessary by raising the culture of the societies that surrounded them. This process was begun through trade eventually progressing to the point where the socieites became reliant on the Mezzan.
The Mezzan did not expoit this reliance, but instead made great pains to employ indigenous populations and raise their standard of living. Still violence was not eradicated. All too frequently disputes would arise among these client worlds or from outside influences that could not be handled through any other means than violence.
In these occasions the Mezzan relied upon their "protectors". Those that become protectors are viewed by the Mezzan with both revernce and sadness. To become a protector is to sacrifice everything. To go out and kill reflects part of the old insanity of man. There are tests that screen for those most susceptible to this. They are encouraged to join the protectors.
To join the protectors is to be cut off from Mezzan society. Those that join are given an elaborate funeral service which they attend. It is a chance to say goodbye to all their love one, before they depart for their new life. Once they leave, they can never go back to their home worlds.
This is not a cruelty, but a kindness. It lets their love ones remember them as they are before blood has stained their hands. Beyond the mental changes that can be wrought by war and conflict, there are enormous physical changes that are wrought on those that join the Protectors.
Flesh is traded for a duralloy sheath. Eyes and ears for other sensory organs. Others give up their entire physical forms to become an intergral part of space ships or other vehicles. Though small the force of protectors is formidable.
The Mezzan for the most part lack ground troops. They have several different variations of infiltrators and commandos but their greatest strength lies in their fleet.
This is just a breif outline of the culture. What are people's thoughts?
