I'm considering making Heleonis's exotic atmosphere a methane based one. The premise is that the crust of the world is methane-ice, and the lower atmosphere gaseous methane. The only habitable part of the world would be high mountain peaks, were the atmosphere is thin enough to permit fight and visibility. Of course, humans cannot breathe methane, so habitat domes and the like would serve as population centers. So my question to any chemical experts out there is if this is at all a plausable situation.

Simple answer, yes it is, the sky will be either green or orange depending on the chemical reactions taking place, but yes methane atmospheres are very common, Neptune, Uranus and Titan to name the ones I know about.

Would be an interesting thing to see...would a world like that raise Imperial Guard regiments? I would love to see armies of men and women wearing special space suit like uniforms in order to protect themselves from the enviroment.
Sorry for kinda going off topic here

I have discussed some of the merits of various atmospheres here [ftp]http://kagemat.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=BuildGeneral&action=display&thread=1093416972[/ftp] not sure how useful you might find it, but if you can't find what you are looking for let me know and i'll see if I can find the info for you. I will need very specific questions though, not just generic like"what would it be like"

Speaking of Imperial Guard- I recommend that you check out the novel Double Eagle by Dan Abnett, where a Marauder squadron actually belongs to the Imperial Guard, as their homeworld is unique (either like Heleonis or a gas giant, I forget) So, instead of Guardsmen jumping around in space suits, from peak to peak, you could have Imperial Guardsmen piloting aircraft or various kinds. Sorry for venturing OffT there...

Two things I would point out:
It would have to be pretty damned cold You can't have any oxygen in the air.
