Right, I've got some time and I'm working on Dorvastor to get the UWBP or whatever it is, sorted out. I'm having one big lump of a bother with orbits. Here's what I'm lookin' at:
50,23,38 - M-V - A6748BE-6 N 912 Im 9A 6
Now, the first bit's irrelevant, the second tells me it's a M-type star of size V and the blurb tells me only (for this bit) that there are two gas giants and one asteroid belt. Am I right here?
I then follow the guide. I get the following:
Solo star, type M1, size V
Maximum orbits: 7 basic, modified to 3 for being M-type.
I am now at step 12 on page 11 of the guide, and the table makes no sense. Would someone be kind enough to explain?

Assume that you have only main world, 2 GGs and belt, nothing more. The main would be first in order to fit into habitable space. So, just don’t roll for number of planets, IMHO.

You have a solo star, therefore section 12 is irrelevant since that is only used for determing available orbits in multi-star systems with a near companion (not far, which doesn't count, or close where the luminosities and mass essentially add together). With a M1V star you've got 10 orbits, so you roll for the other features (empty orbits, etc.) and place them as appropriate. Checking out the type of orbits (step 19), orbit 0 is capable of supporting life (though it might be cold) and the other are 'outer' orbits, generally being too cold to support life. The rules for random generation of gas giant is step 22, and that of planetoid belts step 23. These have been pre-generated with the 'system code'/UWP that you're working on, so you don't have to worry about them. Empty orbits need to be generated and then randomly placed... Then the gas giants and planetoid belt need to be randomly generated... And well, you get the idea. If an orbit is not empty, nor does it contain a gas giant or asteroid belt, you determine the UWP statistics as determined in the following steps of the Guide. It really is a step by step process. Ah, got ya. That's why it didn't fit...
