Kage, if you've got some spare time to GURPS a civilian vehicle...?
I'm looking to assign some characteristics to the giant permafrost grinding machines on my planet.
As an idea, there are various designs as many of them are *extremely* old, but they tend to be between 30 and 80 metres long, driven by tracks and powered by methane gas turbines, themselves obtaining fuel from crushed glacial ice.
They feature a semi-computerised control deck, mostly simple control processors rather than advanced 'true' computers, a crew of engineers and navigators around 20 or 30 strong, basic crew quarters, supplies and life support for two month's travel.
The 'bow' as it were, is composed of a serrated steel grinding drum which spins at several thousand rpm, feeding crushed ice into boilers which seperate the trapped gas, mineral solution, and solid particulates and scree.
Most models of harvester simply dump the solid matter into storage silos, either carried onboard on larger models, or carried by tender vehicles which follow in the wake of the smaller ones. Only the very largest posess smelters to process metals from the ground rock.
Hope this is enough information; not having a copy of GURPS I can't do it myself, but maybe this stuff is useful for someone else to see.

I actually prefer this 'gear-heading' to the world creation in many regards... If I get the chance I'll take a look at it. What you describe doesn't seem that desperately difficult to define in GURPS Vehicles... This is just a general 'gist' post of information: Concept: Ground vehicle. Motive Subassemblies: Tracked drivetrain. Streamlining: None. Slope: Have to think on this one, probably not. Sensors: Communications will probably be restricted to radio, Headlights and ?Searchlight, limited Radar (?ground penetrating). Navigation systems dependent on world type and local technology (i.e. GPS equivalents or what)... And so on... Sorry, I've just realised how late it is for me. Sounds interesting. Why do you want them developed? Remember, out of interest, that you can always get - ahem - copies of GURPS Vehicles if you want to plug and play yourself! Kage

Why develop them? Because they're there, of course! I'm not overly keen on buying anything GURPS-related, because beyond this I probably wouldn't use it again. As for more information; the world is a minor exporter of conduction-based computers so it probably has enough in terms of satellites to have some sort of GPS system. I think of them rather like Icebreaker ships, circa 1930 or so, when arctic sea travel was treacherous and you'd be out there for some time...

Though I would not normally advocate it, you could always try P2P to get hold of a copy. That's what I did, though I would like to stress that I actually bought a real copy and just find it useful to have an electronic copy as well... If you're not keen on doing this - and that's fair enough, I would prefer to do the RPG side of things than the wargame side of things - then I shall put it on my 'to do' list... But the classis militares flagship is at the top, at the moment! ;D Kage

Welcome, juddski... Why did you not use your original name, out of interest? This ties into a related point which you will find by the name of "Webspace...?" in General... Kage
