This is my first idea for a layout for the site. Individual details can be altered easily if required. I havent added the Proteus Map or the Menu items, so use your imagination for the time being.

That's pretty good, Zark! Aside from cosmethics, this is pretty perfect.

I would personally prefer something darker, perhaps with a starry background...
Aside from that it's pretty good!

What do you mean by 'darker'? Darker colours, or a more dark and sinister look? As for the starry background... well, the maps will have stars The whole idea, at the moment, is that this is supposed to look like an Imperial console of some sort. I would be fine with a less 'authentic' look for the site, really. Sure, it would be great if this looked like a real Imperial data-console, with maybe a purity seal and something similarly characterful, but I think that idea works best if the whole page is done 'authentically'. You know, with the "Greetings, Citizen!" introduction, and everything written from an Imperial perspective. So really, I'm fine with both the look we have now, and the idea of a less 'authentic' look.

Personally I prefer clean, neutral layouts, but that is just me.
If we are going for the data-console look, would not the meny be on the other side? As you use the right hand for control. And as you read for the right to the left, you would first look on the map and then the meny.

And as you read for the right to the left, you would first look on the map and then the meny. I guess that pseudo-technopunk menu is the best solution. The optimal is several backgrounds but this is a lot of work, so at least for now I’d prefer to have at least one running.

Good thinking, Skabbhatt...
I'd never even considered that.

That is some good thinking... but would it look right for our visitors?
I'm starting to like the idea of a clean, simple layout myself. No data-console. We'll still make the page like it's an Imperial database, but we won't make it look like an console, so no purity seals, bullet holes, etc. Just a clean layout, like an Imperial database would have (probably black background with green text, or maybe teal or orange) and the typical 40k techno-stuff

Simple is sounding good. Make it look like the dataterm screen, rather then the dataterm itself.
I don't like the idea of putting the navigation on the right - the standard place for navigation on websites is the left, and that's where people look.

Well, I'd say we all agree then. Might we be seeing some ideas and examples anytime soon...? (That's my puppy face)

Hopefully yes. I'm having a 'being useful' streak, and will be getting on with an improved (hopefully) design after I upload the new crest.
I reckon I'll try a few-frills mostly text based layout next. There's so much stuff that can be done with style sheets that we hardly need graphics at all (for the layout, that is)

dread-zone.co.uk/anargo/design.htmOK, Extremely basic, but that's the kind of thing I'm thinking of. Probably add a logo of some sort above the menu. Of course, it'd look better with more content and stuff...

Mere seconds before you posted that, I was about to request that you chose an other colour than green.. Other than that... I like it! Could we see it in another colour perhaps? I'm a big fan of teal myself, but failing that, maybe a shade of orange or blue? Also, I'm not sure I agree with the placing of the thought of the day. I don't have any suggestions for where it would be better to place it though.. maybe at the bottom, or under the menu at the left...? Thanks for whipping that up though! Who knows, perhaps we can get a working version on the net by eastern!?

If you go look at it again, it's now in teal. I also fiddled with the table borders and removed the line between the headers and content.
Not sure where else the TOTD would go - it needs to be in a prominent position, page bottom seems too out of the way.
As for a logo, I was thinking that the best place would be above the menu.
Actually, I'll have a fiddle and move stuff around, see what works.
