After much waiting and a bit of argument with Kage ( over atmosphere), I have a UWP for my planet concept. (previous thread was Tracked City Mining Planet)
Recap: The planet is an inhospitable desert world, placed very close to a hot sun. Anything exposed to the direct rays of the sun is fried instantly. But the planet is very rich in minerals and resources, so the Imperium has built a sort of giant city on treads, actually a grouping of segments, that are continually moving around the equator to stay within the dark zone of the planet. Some other details were discussed, but those can be dredged up later. Right now, I need a name and some other help.
UWP: X780661 8 De 012 Im 1A0
There's no starport at the moment, which will need to be changed later (need a way to transport minerals to orbit). The atmosphere was originally 8 (very dense) but I changed it to 2 (thin, tainted) because I did not want a Venus-like planet, but one with great differences between the light and dark sides in temperature. Kage was unhappy but let it slide.
I'm not sure what government would fit here, but it'll either be 1 (Company/Corporation) or 5 (Feudal Technocracy).
A population of 6 (millions) seemed appropriate, since there is really only one very big city. I pictured it roughly the size of New York, each segment being around 3-4 city blocks square. Would tens of milllions be better?
I chose a law level of 6 (no firearms). Blade weapons might be allowed for personal defense. Since the city is pressurized, any accidental discharge could do major damage.
The tech level is rather low (8), they need imported experts from the AM to instruct them in maintaining/repairing the machinery that keeps the city rolling.
They only native life on the planet is microbes, deep beneath the surface. The resource value is very high (A), since that was the original reason for colonization.
the other stuff is just system details.
I've got the rest of the process to trawl through to generate a Standard Rep, but this can serve as the beginning. Suggestions?

Here's a few Ngarthu, Haratha, Xanthous, Karnak
Would that be in a geo-syncrinous orbit above the city
Somthing that big wouldn't be able to move very fast i assume this planet has a painfully slow rotational period
This might seem like a dumb question but why could'nt people live underground aswell it would surely be simpler than having a mobile city
Why not make it a bit higher and have a permanent mechanicus presence
As long as they weren't green house gases you would still have a temperature difference. The rotation of the planet is so slow that the night side would be freezing even with some green house gasses. There is no need to change the atmosphere, what you might have is vast dust storms that howl around the twilight zone due to the air pressure difference but other than that thick atmosphere no problem
Yep that sounds fine, if the world is as mineral rich as that they should easily be able to affort the maintenace bills
Edit: Oh and make sure your city only travels on unmined areas or that baby's gonna go straight through the crust and collapse all the mines under it

Here's a few Ngarthu, Haratha, Xanthous, Karnak Ooh, Karnak sounds good. I like it. Now it will be. I was planning to have a more advanced starport further out in the system, but the limitations of the Guide disallow this. Besides, of the three other colonized objects in the system, two have Pop.2-3 and one's a moon. So, yes, there will eventually be a orbital spaceport, but it would not be in true geosync. since the city is always changing location. It will indeed. I just hope this doesn't require too much Guide fudging, as I have already come close to invoking the Wrath of Kage. Well, you definitely could, but it would limit you to mining half the day instead of round-the-clock. the planet is so rich in minerals that it's worth the expense. I'd like to, but Kage warned me against increasing the tech level too far. This definitely interests me. So you're saying that a "Dense" atmosphere does not indicate greenhouse gases? My problem is that the city would likely produce a great deal of said gases while processing. Dust storms are cool, though. heh heh heh heh... Since it'll only travel around the equator, it should be easy to avoid mined areas. My dilemna is still on the government, though. A 1 "Corporation/Company" is logical, but there are already several large company-planets in the ASP, and I lose the chance to have rival "companies" run separate segments. Or would I?

So the starport wouldn't suffer the same temp problems of the city then, because i had assumed you would have wanted it to stay in the planets shadow keeping pace with the city The reason venus is so hot is that 90% of its atmosphere is CO2, their is very little chance of one city pumping that much greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. No dense does not mean greenhouse just high pressure, it could be oxygen and nitrogen with alot of the noble gases like argon or xenon mixed in. And as i said the slow rotation means that the night side will lose alot of heat to space even with green house gases present. I don't see why, It's not stated in the fluff but perhaps companies are more prevalent in the imperium than we've been told, so go for it You like it, use it ;D

I thought the geosync. orbit was over a fized point on the planet's surface. But if it's just keeping pace with the moving city, perfect. Geez, I need to pay more attention in school. Excellent, the atmosphere is hereby reverted back to 8. ( happy, Kage? ) Sure, this works. It also lets me tie in another concept I thought of, where the workers/citizens' wages are paid partially in light/air.

Question: How fast would something that big be able to move? Remember that the entire city is not moving off of one propulsion system, but each segment has its own sets of treads.
EDIT: I skipped ahead in the guide and worked out the rotational period. Joy of joys, it came to a whopping 268.25 standard days. The planet's diameter was roughly 11,000 kilometers, so I divided that by the days to find the "miles-per-day" speed of any one point on the equator, and in the end I came with a minimum speed of 1.7something kilometers per hour. Since the shuttle crawler moves at about 2 kph (courtesy of Destacado), I know this speed is easily feasible. Now I just need a realistic maximum speed, for when something goes wrong and they fall behind, closer to the horizon, and need to speed up.

I would be surprised if could exceed more than 15 mph, 20mph max

Perfect. Time to start cranking on the nitty-gritty details. Also, I'm going to raise the tech level to 10, pending the intervention of any Omnipotences , and install a permanant Ad. Mech. presence like you suggested.

Okay, I've progressed as far as the Religious Details, but I'm stuck on how to represent it. I want a dual worship, with a typical Imperial Cult (that's what worshippers of the Emperor are called, right), but also a significant observance of the Machine God (since the Ad. Mech. presence is high and daily survival is reliant on the continued operation of machinery).
The Emperor would work as 9 (Deism), but unless I skip rolling random altogether, the Emperor cannot be worshipped since my Tech level is 10. The Machine God is a different matter altogether. I don't know much about how it is worshipped, could someone with a better knowledge of Adeptus Mechanicus help?
As of now, I'm skipping the rolling to develop a rpresentation of the Imperial Creed. God View = 9 (Deism) Spritual Aim = 7 (be good, avoid being doomed to Chaos after death) Devotion Required: Once per week (weekly service in local chapel) Organized Structure= 9: Loose heirarchy, decisions up to invididual worshippers Liturgical Formality = 4: Services conducted by rote in common languages (Low Gothic) Missionary Fervor: 2 (zealous but intolerant of sophant races) - I took sophant races to mean aliens - did I read it wrong? Number of Adherents: Between 1 million and 10 million - a substantial portion of the populace, but enough so that there are Machine-God worshippers too. Did I get close enough?

Thats a Mechanicus employees only club, and how they get away with such an abomination is beyond me..heresy...mumble mumble....
good for you, its your world, just pick how you want it to be. I never actually bothered with this part of it because i already knew what part religion would play on my worlds, which happens to be a very small part.
