I love the idea of a ghost hive world, but how wedded are you to the idea of plague being reason, why not have it sterelised with neutron bombs, the radiation would take along time to ware off leaving an empty world waiting to be recolonized at a later date. Even when that happens it would take millenia before it was even half the hive world it was before

Secondly the virus as I’ve said is linked to warp and quite possibly it can survive such a bombing. Note, that there has not been found out what exactly triggers it and how this virus ‘looks like’… I even may play it out as fully warp-bases virus, affecting souls… like daemons do.
