I'm new here and wanted to make a world in this subsector. I'm just kinda of confused with the planetary system and location element of world creation. I want to make a desert world populated by nomads with only the capital city as its tie with the imperium. It would supply gemstones and exotic foodstuffs to the hives of the sytem. If you think this idea is inapproiate for the theme of the subsector just tell me and if not could you give me some advice on designing the system and such. Thanks in advance

I'm new here and wanted to make a world in this subsector. First of all, welcome abroad! I’m glad that you have chosen my sub-sector as a location of your planet. I wish you to specify several points: - how dry should the planet be? i.e., grassland, desert or dead desert? Should it be hot/cold, as well as other preferences (gravity, toxic atmosphere, etc.)
- If they are nomads, their tech is rather low and most likely agricultural productivity is also just a little bit above subsistence level. So, what exactly they export and in what quantities.
- On whom you plan to base nomads culture upon and what non-military peculiarities will they have?

First off, take a look at the "Introduction and Announcement" board for information about world-building and where you can download both the "Guide" (which you need to build your system and world) and the "Example of World Building" which you can use to see how the process of world-building in the ASP goes. (The "Example" only contains Extended System Generation, where you build the system in which your planet is located, and not world-building until I can convert the newer document to .pdf...) If you have any questions you can always post them in the World-building Questions and Submissions board, where I'm sure that someone will pipe up to help where they can. The general process of world-building has, however, started. You've posted a concept to the subsector forum (i.e. Meksum, the "hiveworld subsector") that you wish to locate your world. You're going to need the Guide to interpret the statistics, but you can see all of the stars within subsector here. The normal process is for you to scan down the list and see if there is a world that holds up to your requirements... for a desert world, a hydrographic code of 0 or the "De" code would be appropriate... There are two 'desert worlds' mentioned: one at co-ordinates 59,45,54 with "Universal World Profile" (UWP) information of 'M-V - B580365-9 De Lo 422 Im 060'; and another at co-ordinates 59,46,54 with UWP 'M-V - C460100-A De Lo 303 Im 600'. Both worlds are orbitting colder stars (class-M) so the chances are that you're going to have to change the star type with zholud's (and mine) permission. (This of course assumes that you want it as an "Arrakis"-type world...) But stop! There is another potential. While I think it was a typo you say "...It woud supply gemstones and exotic foodstuffs to the hive of the system..." You probably meant subsector or sector, but this has fascinating possibilities. To create your hot world you would need one of the hotter star types, say F- or G-class. There are plenty of those as you can tell from the list... But none of them are 'desert' worlds, unfortunately... <sigh> Hang on, though. They don't need to be! The statistics mentioned are for the 'most important world' in the system - the "mainworld" - but there are going to be other planets! You could put your desert world in another orbit and have it supply 'gemstones' to the mainworld...? This will mean that you're going to have to build two worlds, but it would be an ideal solution to the problem as well as allowing you to immerse yourself in one of the most important features of the Anargo sector: world-building! ;D Furthermore it would quite valuably show another important feature of the ASP: while the minimum level of information is the 'standard representation' of the mainworld, each planet in a star system is up for development! <Kage tries to calm down in face of the exciting potential here>

I second Kage’s idea. If you, as the world(s) designer, also agree, I will drop you several systems for your pleasure… have you made up a name for the world(s)? I hope it is meaningful… I just like to have hints in the names that give a larger picture…

Here is the general concept. The planet is called Arandiss. I did get some inspiration from Dune, but mainly for the nomadic desert world. Ok here is the concept. Arandiss was a temperate world that was inhabited by an alien race(maybe eldar), but in the past they vanished about the smae time of a global catastrophe that wiped out the worlds oceans and left it the barren desert world it is. It was later settled by humans who eventually succumbed to chaos until the the planet was liberated during the great crusade. It was then resettled. Its main export is crystals that are found in the salt wastes which are the remanants of its oceans. These are gathered and exported to be used to make laser devices and such. Also the nomadic tribes that live in the desert raise herds of hardy lizards that they ride and slaughter for meat. Also I was thinking that maybe there is a breed of cactii that grows in the desert that secretes a gel to protect itself from losing water that could be harvested and used as a skin protecting ointment. I was also thinking that a shrine exists on the world that has a fountain that constantly flows with pure water that was left when the liberator) primarch or saint) plunged their sword into the ground. Thats the genreal idea I had. I read through the world generation info and the one problem I had was systme location and generating the system.
I forgot to add that also there is really one city on the surface. Since the majority of the population is nomadic their would need to be one place they can bring goods to trade. This would also be the capital city and their link with the imperium. Crystals, lizard meat, cactii, whatever and these they would trade for manufactured goods like water purifers, lasguns, fabric, and metal tools. The tech level will be low, but the capital will have a decent tech rating and the population will have high tech weaponry but will lack the ability to manufacture and repair it.

Here is the general concept. The planet is called Arandiss. As I said, why this very name? what about making it ending with –kum, like Kara Kum (desert)? Or persuade me that name is ok… I can live with any name, but I dislike ‘it just sounds cool’ approach, advocated by our reverend Boss sometimes. Arandiss was a temperate world that was inhabited by an alien race(maybe eldar), but in the past they vanished about the smae time of a global catastrophe that wiped out the worlds oceans and left it the barren desert world it is. Ok, shift of orbit, no problem. If you don’t buy two-worlds idea, we can make Eldar(?) world and then shift it closer to the star. And you should decide whether they were Eldar and what they have done with the planet. And why? It was later settled by humans Why they decided to settle a barren world? There are some more Earth-like planets among the two hundred billion stars… who eventually succumbed to chaos Again, why? I understand the chaos interest, but what seduced guys here? Details please until the the planet was liberated during the great crusade. It was then resettled. Its main export is crystals that are found in the salt wastes which are the remanants of its oceans. These are gathered and exported to be used to make laser devices and such. With the sheer volume of lasguns produced, I’d prefer them used in other devices or jewellery. Also the nomadic tribes that live in the desert raise herds of hardy lizards that they ride and slaughter for meat. What lizards eat? Are they local or introduced? Also I was thinking that maybe there is a breed of cactii that grows Eats only solar energy? I’m not fan of the gel, in spite I understand the idea. Also note that you’ll get hotter and colder areas, after all you got a planet… I was also thinking that a shrine exists on the world that has a fountain that constantly flows with pure water that was left when the liberator) primarch or saint) plunged their sword into the ground. How this really works. We welcome wonders, but better to have them generally understandable.

Ok here are some answers. 1. The name is sort of a play off arakiss from dune. I'm terrible with names so i always find it difficult naming things. 2. I wanted to make it settled by aliens before to give me world a dark past. Normal alien race that is corrupted and fights amongst itself. The reason for this I liked the idea of having the aliens live under ground and be the boogie men of the world. 3. I never thought about why the humans settled it. Settling a barren world would most likely have to be engine failure or maybe warp storms. I'll hav eto look into this. 4. The originals settlers worshipping chaos is also part of the attempt to give the world a dark past. I love the imagery of the desert wasteland populated by the ruins of the past so two dead civilizations and their monuments to the dark gods. I kinda want the world that is generally of very little importance but with the right knowledge it could be flooded with the dark magics of chaos. 5. The idea of crystals is that over the years the salt leftover from the seas merged together to form high quality crystals that could be used in quality laser weaponry like lascannons, but maybe could use it as part of electronic gear and jewelry. 5. The lizards i have not decided if they were introduced or not, but for food they would eat have developed the ability to each the plants of the mountainous regions and be able to survive long treks without food or water. 6. The planet is not entirely desert. Their are northern polar capped regions, large mountain chains, and rockier regions where the majority of the human population lives. The desert wasteland is what was once the oceans of the world. 7. The fountain is actually just connected to a water reservoir beneath the surface, but the people dont know this. One of the reasons I came up with the idea of this world is because I wanted a story for the desert board I was creating. I making a desert board and when designing terrain I wanted to keep it within the theme of the planet. I would like to know your honest opinion of my world idea. Do you like it? Do you think had potential? I'm a history buff so histories and describing the human aspects of the planet is easier for me, but climate and biology is a weak area for me. Its a little harder to come up with realistic reasons for what animals exist and why.

Ok here are some answers. 1. The name is sort of a play off arakiss from dune. I'm terrible with names so i always find it difficult naming things. I don't know the dune universe very well, but I do think that such 'play offs' from other names should be done with great care. Especially if the worlds are very similar to the originals in other universes. And like zholud, I also like names that actually mean something. Using my own planets as examples, Archaios is greek for ancient, since that world is the capital of its sub, and the first world to join the Imperium in the sub. Tryphon was the name of a catholic saint, made martyr after a heroic death, which works well with the history of that world. Etc... I think it would be cool if this was an Eldar world up to the Fall. After the fall, this once-paradise was now a desert world, and the few Eldar that survived were twisted parodies of their former selves. The Imperium might not even know that these underground raiders are in fact descendants of Eldar, twisted and mutated by the catastrophe that ruined this planet. Does the world have minerals? Some very rare minerals and crystals perhaps? Small quantities, but great value, like Chinchare in the Eisenhorn novels. Fair enough, but keep in mind that the Inquisition tends to get rid of worlds that have fallen entirely to Chaos. Small cults and rebellions they can tolerate, content with just burning thousands of people. World-wide incidents typically lead to Exterminatus though. If the science-knowits approve of this, that would be very cool indeed. How about undomesticated grox from the early human colonisation? That would make it dead desert then, because of all the salt, right? Fair enough, in my opinion. Perhaps the person that created this fountain was actually knowledgable with science though, and had scanned the surface for water. In reality, this person used a melta-lance or something to crack open the rocky ground. History would tell the tale as if the person has actually just used his/her sword and created a fountain from nothing but sand. So far so good, but little critical information has been posted so far I really want to know more about the culture and history of the planet. No worries. I'm not a history buff or knowledgable with science (except psychology), so I know how you feel

Ok here are some answers. 1. The name is sort of a play off arakiss from dune. I'm terrible with names so i always find it difficult naming things. I guess we can play other way round and name it Sikara, adding some new ending to usual –us, -um, and other stuff. or play with real deserts names. Or look world desert, thirst, arid in different languages. 2. I wanted to make it settled by aliens before to give me world a dark past. Normal alien race that is corrupted and fights amongst itself. The reason for this I liked the idea of having the aliens live under ground and be the boogie men of the world. I like the idea, but this creates a problem that Eldar Fall was in M30, when no colonisation by humans took place – we had Age of Strife and aliens seized even worlds in Solar system! So, either another race or create a story about ‘early Fall Eldar’ 3. I never thought about why the humans settled it. Settling a barren world would most likely have to be engine failure or maybe warp storms. I'll hav eto look into this. ok, another crash… similar settling route was used by our Forge world as well. If is wasn’t changed later, of course. Remember, you need them to survive and the live and develop.4. The originals settlers worshipping chaos is also part of the attempt to give the world a dark past. I love the imagery of the desert wasteland Me too, but we need more info. 6. The planet is not entirely desert. Their are northern polar capped regions, large mountain chains, and rockier regions where the majority of the human population lives. The desert wasteland is what was once the oceans of the world. You’ll know what planet has after rolling dice. This returns us to your choice – 2-worlds or 1-world system do you prefer? Maybe will write more later, but at present no spare time. Heck, I should drop this work or it’ll kill me.

At work today I wrote up a history of my world( not named yet looking up greek for desert). The planet was originally an eldar colony and its settlers created a large thriving city and harvested the seas for minerals and food. As time went on the people began to become very decadent and some began to want more. The corrupted eldar began to fight for control of the world. THe leaders of these eldar had turned to chaos in an attempt to increase their power. The two sides began a bitter struggle with no quarter asked or given. At the height of the fighting the corrupted eldar unleashed a spell that wiped out their counterparts along with most of the world lifeforms and obliterated its vast oceans. The surviving corrupt eldar retreated underground. The first human settlers came to the world following a prophet. He promised to lead the settlers to paradise. They travelled until coming to the planet and the prophet latent psychic powers attracted him to this because of the psychic devices and monuments left by the eldar. Upon landing they built a colony and tapped the the underground reservoirs. Upon the death of the prophet many contenteders fought to take his place. Each gathered a group of followers around themselves and fought each other for control. Each of these contenders had already taken up worship of the various chaos dieties and the rest of the colonists followed them into chaos worship. Each fought the other and built monuments and shrines to gain the favor of their gods. This continued until the world was reconquered during the great crusade. All the chaos corrupted colonists were put to death. The world was then resettled by a regiment that reconquered the world and they set about building a new settlement. Many of those original settlers left the city to scout the world for resources and these would later be the first nomads.

... the greek word for desert is Eremia or Erimos, I think. It's also the name of one of the continents on Archaios in the Archaios subsector.

<Kage raises hand at the concept of the 'corrupted eldar'> Erm...? Hello...? Care to sell me on this one? I merely point out the 'fluffs' common standpoint that such cannot exist. Admittedly that's corrupted craftworld eldar, but there we go. With that said, I'm rather fond of the idea that the world is a coloniae with the whole "resource rush" overlay. Cool. But just for me... be very, very, VERY careful with the eldar concept.

yes Kage takes his Eldar very seriously, dont you Kage? /me hands Kage a Eldar Guardian Action Figure to play with CELS' edit; Thanks for that contribution, Shamus. Thrilled to have you back.Oh yes, thanks for that Shamus. Good to see that you're back into the full swing of contributing to the ASP!

the corrupted eldar unleashed a spell that wiped out their counterparts along with most of the world lifeforms and obliterated its vast oceans. The spell is maybe a wrong word but I understand what you are after… the problem is that is the oceans are evaporated due to psychic energy that soon had to die off (It had, right?) why the steam haven’t became water? I thought you’d prefer to move orbit closer to the star. One of the suggested reasons – upon the brink of death, the warlock decided – “if the world is not mine, then it’ll belong to no one!” and decelerated the turnaround of the planet – shift to closer orbit. The surviving corrupt eldar retreated underground. The first human settlers came to the world following a prophet. He promised to lead the settlers to paradise. When they landed did they understand that he had been wrong? Did they kill the prophet for this? And crucial point – when, on 40k universe timeline did it happen? Upon the death of the prophet many contenteders fought to take his place. Each gathered a group of followers around themselves and fought each other for control. Why did they want his place? What does it give to them? Why no one just gather their things and move 10,000 miles in any direction to make own small colony? Each of these contenders had already taken up worship of the various chaos dieties and the rest of the colonists followed them into chaos worship. Why they followed only Chaos? Have they linked with Eldar for some backing? And don't forget that it would be nice to be sold on the eldar concept a bit more. Just need a tad more information and motivation, that's all...
