Here came fluff on the Hive World from a Portent.net thread. Nothing new
Finally synopsis of my Hiveworld. Ideas welcomed.
Name: Meksum I.
Type: Hiveworld, sub-sector capital.
Orbital distance: 0.18 AU (26,927,616.6 km)
Equatorial Diameter: 16,648.4 km (Terra 12,756 km)
Rotation: 23h 7m 4s
Orbital Period: 39.89 Terran days
Atmosphere: standard Terra-type oxygen-nitrogen mix, no significant taint addition
Surface Atmospheric Pressure: .95 atm
Hydrosphere: waterworld, over 95% of surface covered with water/ice.
Axial Tilt: 20°33`57``
Gravity: 1.08 g
Surface Temperature: -15° C (281.79 K). maximal temperature in Equatorial region up to +15.2° C in summer after 12 hour day; above 2 hex row ice cap starts. Minimal temperature -76° C.
Precipitation: around 10 cm/day in equatorial region.
Wind speed: Constant 2 m/c
Aestimare: C308
Tithe Grade: Exactis Prima
Lifeforms, Autochthonic: Single-cellular, extremely high levels of radiation and low temperature led to inability of planet to get more organized life.
Lifeforms, Introduced: None, except pets. Several ecosystem importation project were launched, the last in 134.M37, but none achieved any degree of success. Hive-tales speak about monstrous beasts lumbering in the deepest ocean’s cavities, but most likely this is just superstition.
Population: 160-210 billions
Archaeotech Resource: None
Notes:
First Catalogued: 345.M32, Scout vessel “doomsday” cpt. Lamantino. Orbital Augury Only. Annexus Imperialus.
First imperial landing: 345.M32, 5th Brigade, 2nd Ultima Segmentum Re-Conquest Armada “Looseheads”. No pacification process.
Brief history of Hive World Meksum I, with some dark secrets revealed.
Astronomers supposedly discovered the world somewhere around M19, but actual warp travel to such distant planets was almost impossible. During the First Navigators Expansion (M20-21) world was catalogued, but no future mention about it appears, probably because at that moment a large number of clearly superior world was open for habitation and exploitation. The first wave of colonization of the world was around the last century of M.23, when reduction of warp travel tariffs made extraction of by-product of single-cellular organisms native to the planet highly profitable. By-product is some compound organic thingie, product of high radiation and unstable mono-cellular life. The colonists either lived at the space station covered from radiation with the planet or in the deepest cavities, were natural shield of water made life more or less suitable for humans, as well as in several natural caverns in the ice. The large volumes of extraction led to creation of space port, while unwise and predatory scavenging of resource led to its depletion. And planet would have become a ‘host town’, if not the slight anomaly – it is appeared that movement one of the important worlds is way safer through Meksum’s hub, even despite it took additional usage of fuel, the supply of which was easily obtained in nearby gas giant. Links to powerful world from one hand and need to supply fuel and repair from the other led to creation of trade centre on this territory. Trade, repair and supply services lead to creation of the first artificial colony under the oceans, that among other things supplied the fresh exotic fruits grown at specially created ‘hanging gardens’ and different kinds of entertainment for tired but rich far traders, orbital miners and such. The Planet was treated as world with highly hostile environment, as star emitted gamma rays, and some other, whose names are long forgotten which caused high mortality rates and greater than usual fraction of mutants. The star port was situated in such a way that planet constantly shielded it from the star’s radiation.
Starting from M.25 warp storms led to the fail of previous human civilisation. Failure wasn’t happen overnight, it was more alike crawling but inevitable doom. Firstly, warp travels became more and more dangerous, and on several planets Man of Stone rebelled, destroying great amount of knowledge and hiding undestroyed. The long established opinion about Meksum I as ‘safe harbour’ led to massive, even excessive usage of it as a part of route had to connect systems. Alas, it was much easier to get in there than out and thus, millions upon millions of unwilled migrants started to settle the space port (which could barely operate as managing computers were ruined almost immediately by frantic immigrants from the world were machines ran wild) and then the planet itself when port was full. As more migrants arrived the underwater cities grew even deeper, until they reached the molten core of planet. This resulted in ‘thin-but-wide’ hives, which soon became interconnected, resulting, unlike many Hiveworlds in a single planet wide hive city.
The colonization of the planet led to creation of settlements under the ocean’s bottom, as well as cities on both poles which are occupied only less than a half of a year each, when due to axial tilt no sun shines. Due to the fact that left on the sun city would soon start to glow with induced radioactivity, every time the dawn is near the polar city is disassembled and stored in specially created ice cavern over 2 km below the surface.
The hanging gardens were transformed to serve as a main source of food to over 50 billions of people, giving productivity unthought-of even during the Golden Age (primary because during those days food production wasn’t crucial and no intense development was conducted). The nearby gas giant was seeded with imported ecosystem, of methane-based atmosphere and became additional food source. During the late Age of Strife period several nearly systems were re-connected using sub-light travel and Meksumian Confederacy was formed.
During the next millennia, up to M28, People continued to arrive and planetary government in order to prevent tension (a lot of people living toe-to-toe always creates conflicts) started to add pacifying drugs in either air or drinking water. Everything was good until the day when drug producing material/factory was off. The result was world-wide jinks, wars, and other stuff loved by GW. A lot of tech knowledge was lost in result.
The inflow of ships of course connected with inflow of Navigators and the large number of them was gathered during the calamity. They formed new house, or more correctly guild, which tried to improve possibilities of navigation through the turmoil of the Warp. Only limited success was achieved but the drawback – large number of mutations led to the rise of fear and supesticion toward Navigators as well as even greater secrecy.
And then liberators came...
