Dolero is a death world enshrouded in an ashen desert and large chains of active volcanoes. It was uninhabited by sentient life through out most of its history until this area of the Galaxy was claimed by the Empire of man. After this sector was well on its way to being settled the sub sector was cut off by a warp storm and the sector was left vulnerable to the predications of hostile aliens and the malign forces of Chaos. After a fierce set of conflicts and the recession of the storm, the Imperium was able to regain control, but the cost had been high. Afterwards it was decided that should the sector be cut off again it would be able to defend itself far better than it had before. To help that process a “local” Storm trooper regiment would be stationed upon this inhospitable desert planet. As the planet was uninhabitable to most all but the most stalwart foes of man and due to its inherent ease of defense it would make it a perfect spot to help defend the sub sector. From here, they have served to protect the Emperor’s subjects and worlds from the foulness of the heretical Aliens and the Blasphemers of Chaos.
The world is constantly swept by corrosive sandstorms that plague all of the life on the windward sides of the various mountain ranges that cover Dolero. All life as the Imperium knows it is on the sheltered sides of the mountains. Where small lizards, insects, and nutrient rich lichens that grow off the small water runoffs from the mountains. About once every 3 years, the water runoff gathers in sufficient quantities to make a few small lakes in the areas that the mountains shelter. It is during this time that local wild and plant life reproduce. It is here that the only mammal lives and the only time it roams freely. These mammals are dog like in appearance and breathe the local Nitrogen atmosphere. It is during these seasons of water that they emerge from their dens beneath the rocks and sand. The eat and devour rapidly whatever they can catch as this will be all they will have for the next three years while they hibernate till the next water season. After gorging themselves and drinking large quantities of water they go back to their dens and go back to sleep.
The local Storm Trooper legion quickly adapted to their new home. Due to the fact that the world was unable to be traversed without the aid of a sealed suit, the legion soon adopted many of the tactics that other Imperial guard regiments took on other hostile worlds. When outside of their Hab bases, the troopers wear the standard ceramite armor over a self sealing bodysuit to protect them from their home world’s atmosphere. Unless required to, the troopers ride in their own variant of the Chimera APC. In practicality they function more of like an elite “steel legion”. The legions name was adopted after a command section witnessed the voracity that the Dolerian hounds hunted and ate their prey and the skill at which they hid their dens when the wet season was over. At first it was a few companies but soon gained popularity throughout the whole regiment. So became the Hounds of Dolero.
The Hounds operate out of three different bases on the planet, two spaced along the equator and one in the northern hemisphere. The two on the equatorial line are the main bases of the legion and house most of the personnel. The northern base is the regiment’s foundry where the local Chimera variant is produced, munitions storage, armory, and training area.
The defenses of the planet are much more than a planet of comparable size and population due to its importance and local hostilities. A macro cannon is stationed at the primary base along the equator along with various planetary missile batteries in each of the mountain ranges. Inter-planetary las weapons are less accurate due to the composition of the atmosphere so except for the lasguns that the troopers carry, ballistic weapons such as the autocannon and battle cannon are used much more often. The reacon elements of the regiment often use the rocket or missile equipped sentinel due to their preference and the local conditions. To land on the planet ships have to travel by instrument due to the opaque clouds that blanket the planet. Without the aid of the imperial landing beacons landing on ones own is close to suicide.
