Hey, I have a suggestion for the Castellan subsector, that you may have seen me mention in the Meta forum.
Once upon a time in the Age of the Imperium, powerful warpstorms all but isolated the Castellan subsector. What started these warpstorms I do not know, but perhaps it could be connected to ork activity. Whatever the cause, the result was catastrophic for the Castellan subsector, who were left unsupported by the rest of the sector, and indeed the rest of the Imperium. Left to fend for themselves, the Castellans first managed to uphold the impression that they still had the support of their sector. After some time though, there was no hiding that they were in fact alone, which the ork warbosses were quick to act upon.
I imagine that perhaps two or three systems would be (temporarily?) lost to the orks during this period, or perhaps each and every world in the subsector was threatened by the time the warp storms ceased, and the cavalry arrived? I think it would make a good setting for great battles with tragic sacrifice and the birth of a few heroes that became part of the Anargo legend.

May I recommend a little saga about Battlefleet Castellan bravely hurling itself into impossible odds to allow refugees to escape before the warp storms close in...

Hmmmmmmmm, being cut off from the rest of the sector does seem an interesting idea. It could be tied in with the idea of the tide and the first Ork Waagh! The ideas I have for the planet I am developing (Massil) feature an open society that are quite stubborn and independent when the safety of their homeworld is under threat. This could link in with Massil being a world under siege during this invasion. The defenders held off the orks from their cities for several years before the fleet was able to brea through the warp storm to bring aid!

With regards to the main concept behind this post, it is definitely intriguing. I know that Sikkukkut is generally around so I guess we'll have to wait until he has commented. Note: With reference to the Pendulum Tide, there is still no attempt at an explanatory concept for them other than "it exists becuase it is cool". This needs to be addressed if possible... Kage

Okay lets have a go at this topic then, rolls up sleeves, puts on fluff producing thought hat and begins to type...
For millennia since the orginal colonisation of the Anargo Sector, what is now known as the Castellan Sub-Sector flourished as one of the main agricultural centres of the rapidly expanding Sector. The Sub was centred around the world of Massil and long developed agri-world which had was the centre stone of Anargo's main food production. Located towards the exterior of the sub, Massil was a serene planet with expansive forests and vast plains ideal for agriculture. Along with four systems Massil supplied vast quantities of foodstuffs to Anargo and the developing hiveworlds of the Sector. These planets were rich in resources and many men became rich and powerful, settling new planets in the sub-sector to act as processing facilities, storage bases, manufacturing plants and to provide labour for the agri-worlds.
However in M3?..........Think up date!!! ...A sudden and unforcast warp storm isolated the Massilan sub from the rest of the Sector. Disaster seemed certain as without the trade routes to Massil systems would surely begin to starve! Riots unexpectedly erupted on several of the main Imperial worlds sectorwide and Battlefleet Anargo was put on high alert. Then to everyones horror a faint message was picked up which had been able to clear the rolling warp storms...
"Send Help, we are under attack!"
...Terror quickly spread throughout the sector as people feared that Ork invaders from the adjacent Cruciatine Sector were embarking on a mighty Waagh! The Battlefleet was readied and more than 80 regiments from across the sector were prepared to answer the threat of the attack. Voayaging into uncharted warp storms the Fleet and the Navy transport vessels headed to the rescue.
After 9 months of near fatal travel throught the Warp the Liberation Fleet, as it became unknown, emerged at the major jump point at Parcellus, close to the outer edges of the Massil sub. Now they were able to witness the exact nature of the invasion and the horror that was unfolding...

Indeed the rumours of an Ork invasion were true, an titantic army of greenskins had been swept into the Sector on the mysterious tides of the warp storm (SEE got the Pendulum Tide in there!). 2 planets had utterly fallen to the orks and several had been battling landings for several months. Worst of all Massil was overun, the silos, processing plants and space ports in the hands of the enemy and the remnents of the PDF surrounded in the two largest settlement on the planet.
The Liberation of the sub to 12 years as the men of the Imperial Guard battled to exterminate the greenskin menace. Slow grinding wars of attrition took a massive toll on humans and orks alike; numerous space battles were fought in the depths as ork pirates triedto break the Imperial war lines. The battle was finally won when Space Marines of the Frostbringers Chapter arrived with an undefeatable vengence.
In the decades after the Massil Sub invasion the High Governor of the Anargo Sector set in force plans that changed the entire sector. New colonies were established across the star of Anargo in order to provide more sources of foodstuffs should another invasion occur. People were shipped from the hiveworlds to provide workers in the rebuilding the shattered sub-sector. The Governor decreed that Massil should be fortified and that the size of its PDF increased, many of the surrounding systems followed suit raising home regiments where before they had been inadequately defended by garrisoned troops.
A new Sub-Sector Capital was established on Parcellum, now renamed Castellan. It was a mighty centre of organisation and logistics, many regiments were stationed there and new factories were founded to provide military equipment and to rebuild the broken economy of the sub.
Massil was totally changed by the invasion, the once scattered population grouped together in new cities which were founded on the open plains. Many millions of people came to these towns and high walls and fortifications were made to protect them. The fierce nature and stubborn resolution of the people of the sub grew and became a byword for steadfast devotion to Him on Terra and an unbreakable spirit. Despite the crippling invasion the Casetllan Sub emerged a stronger and more united collective of planets than ever before.

Cool, Tynesh, that's actually similar to what I had in mind. Of course, these agri-worlds would probably not be responsible for feeding all the worlds in the Anargo sector. As Kage has argued, even hive worlds would be able to feed their population, to a certain degree. What I suggest though, is that in such times of rapid expansion, new worlds were colonised so fast that there wasn't enough time to wait for the Adeptus Mechanicus to finish terraforming and build ecosystems capable of nurturing the colonists. Hence, the agri-worlds of the Castellan sector were responsible for feeding the colonists of the many young Imperial worlds in the Anargo sector. Also, I think it would be far more interesting if the Frost Wraiths (or Frostbringers, if you must : actually took heavy losses when freeing the sector, and would spend decades rebuilding their chapter.

Okay as I work on the Massilian system Std Rep at the moment, the planet of Massil is becoming more of a civilised world, with some exports etc.
I guess the invasion could have destroyed a large % of the population (it being 250million now), Parcellum may well have been in a better state after the invasion to organise and administer a sub-sector.
So Massil is a civ come fortress world, however I don't see it as being a planet wrapped in razor barb and minefields, more like fortified cities and the rest of the planet pretty much as it was before. Battlefields from the invasion will have most likely been picked over and cleaned up (markers for dead soldiers like Flanders) and tank wrecks recovered. Cities were rebuilt and fortified after the invasion so no ruins really either.

What about a logical extension of the 'walled city' but one which actually allows for the increased possibilities of future warfare? Kage

Do you mean building bigger walls than the size needed to surround the city??
I am thinking that these cites will have been well planned with large blocks of buildings in concentric rings, of housing and commercial/ industrial space. Kind of like NY skyscene but more solid an of similar height. New Rrings could be built as the population grew or more layers built on the tops of blocks, sort of like a very proto-hive. While being able to accomodate canals and parks etc the cities will be heavily functional, dead end roads awkward angles and open spaces with good lines of sight, making the area easy to defend.

Was more thinking about a walled city that actually haid a "pair of balls" rather than the depressingly said Storm of Iron fortress... Kage

Incidentally, I've started writing a short campaign based on the clearup operations near the end of the Ork war...
I'm focusing on a little cluster of unimportant systems in Castellan, the Imperial guard beating up the few remaining Orks and bringing the worlds back into some semblance of order.

"Balls.........."
hmmmmmmmmm
Well lets see, 25m high walls, Autocannon emplacements, missile emplacements (mini manticores?) earthshaker platforms every so often, lots of space to marshall troops.
I kind of like the idea of maybe having titan-like sentry towers defending the principle city. A Princeps wired into loads of hydra batteries missile racks or lascannons on a large wall tower. All the weapons moving in sync, ripping through orks or blowing up stompas!
I really want the cities to be designed to be really defensible, with walls facing the outer city walls reinforced and all entrances on the inner walls of buildings. Each circle of buildings would be separated by open park or a canal.
Ideas please!

Perhaps also have the main city built in rings, with each ring of buildings higher than the rest. This works in a fantasy setting (post archers on roofs) and it could easily be adapted to 40K.
