Looks like there might actually be a WH40k RPG some day. This is more "General Chat" than "RPG in the Anargo Sector", but I'll leave it here for now. I was excited for a second until reading the press release. An updated version of the WFRP system - one which I consider to be playable but one of the poorer abstractions out there - is a bad move. Though I must admit to be slightly biased. WFRP was the first RPG I played, not only was I an experienced player but the GM also had limited experience, but I cannot shake the fact that it is in many ways 'childish'. A completely inappropriate system, but there are some things that one cannot shake. The whole nightmare of character generation moderated by career progression... ick. Alignment systems, an awful magic system... And, of course, the many discussions that I've seen that have touted it as a more 'mature' system because it is 'dark fantasy' and therefore that much more realistic. (Then again I've seen the arguments used for horror games as well...) <sigh> I guess I'm just one big burning cynic... More so with the fact that Inquisitor was touted as a semi-RPG. I just think that it's a crying shame that they don't develop a new system or they don't take up an established system. The true WFRP fans will surely not mind a system change... after all, as they are want to say, it's the setting that makes the difference not the system. (Though they argue the system to be superior!) Kage

Well for the record I considered posting the original message in the general section, but decided against it as I wanted to attract the RPG group's attention. As far as the news is concerned, I am excited because we may - MAY - get a glimpse at how a semi-official source approaches role-playing in 40k. The system is, I agree, flawed in some respects and really does need an overhaul - if not a replacement. However, this has been discussed by other more knowledgeable individuals (including you Kage), and better I might add (however I HAVE played WHFRP quite a few times and enjoyed it...plus I love the background). So let's leave it at that for now. I will be pleased if we see a fluff-heavy RPG produced that has the blessings of GW behind. However, why that is important remains a mystery - I just feel like it would be nice to see an official WH40kRPG some day. Maybe just to generate a line of rpg-oriented miniatures (and that probably wouldn't happen)? Who knows, but that's my current attitude. -V

<grin> That sounded a bit snippy, but I've got the chapter to hand in tomorrow so I'm probably reading into things. Unfortuantely GW is never going to fix the real problems of the 'fluff', which is the essence of their trouble. The system doesn't make that much of a difference but still... I'd play WFRP but I wouldn't GM it if paid. Kage

Snippy? LOL no such inference intended. In fact, I think we probably think along the same lines when it comes to systems and 40k. I am not sure how I feel about the fluff being broken, however. I do like the old RT fluff, as that was when I started playing 40k...but that doesn't mean the current fluff is unusable. I'd have to think on this a bit. -V

Current 'fluff' only becomes unuseable when you take into account RT-era information, and vice versa. I've always added a historical and thoughtful approach to the 'fluff' which generally doesn't include such things as "Well, GW says now... so that means you're wrong and don't know what you're talking about!" approaches... Ah well. Kage

How is Inquisitor not an RPG, Kage?

Trust me, reguardless of what anyone says Inquisitor is not an RPG. It's a wargame with some RPGish bits thrown in.
Doesn't mean that I don't like it, but it isn't an RPG.
