The problem with 'sexes' is that it means you have to have both sexes to get offspring, and the Ork(oids) are known to form full eco-systems even if just a few creatures or types of creatures are present. Example, a mob of orks will eventually be surrounded by gretchin, snotlings and squigs.

It may be that the orks carry redundant genes for the squigs in their own "DNA" so in the presence of no squigs in the eco system, they could produce squigs instead of orkoids....sort of like some species of frogs that can change sex dependent on their enviroment. There is a herbicide (atrazine ) that has been known to cause wild leopard frogs to change their sex. There might be ecological factors or chemicals factors brought on by the lack of exposure to squig spores that bring this about. Interestingly enough, I was reading the fluff on orks an came across a part of the fluff that seems to indicate that the snotlings may have been the original form of the race and the they then created the orks as warriors. The snotlings had a symbiotic relationship with the fungus that they ate which made them super intelligent, but the orks ate all of the fungus which destroyed their society. Is this where the idea od the fungoid orks arose? Check out the following link for the full story. www.criticalhit.co.uk/w40krp/WD118_Ork_Race.shtmlIs this the old fluff? Has it been overwritten by newer fluff?

Well yeah that is old fluff a number of people such as myself like it but a number really hate that idea.
But it think that the skin idea you mentioned before warrents further attention.
Maybe instead of somthing like a cyst or boil perhaps its a skin rash type of thing except that the itchy dry area is new spores.
That would be an effective way of shedding the spores (Scrathing constantly when trotting around the place shedding off spores with each scratch)

Curious. And contradictory - isn't our warboss supposed to be some hundred years old?

Survive doesn't necessarily mean grow old and die.
Intervention from other causes, such as a choppa through the skull, would have more influence over the Orks lifespan.

I was going to say that, but my post was lost So yes, I would agree with Lordof. Ghazghkull is at least over 80 years old, for example. Amongst the orks, the only ones that live to grow old are the ones that grow big and dangerous. Thus, all leaders in ork society are big, dangerous and old. The boyz that form the majority of the ork hordes are probably anything from just a few years old to adults.

If this has already been discussed i apologize 4 wasting your time, but arn't squigs the result of genetic tampering by tyranids, i recall reading somewhere that orks had a long standing grudge against the nids because of this. And why shouldn't orks be a plant based life form i see no objection to this at all, if anything its a very good explanation to the rapid infestation of worlds by orks

Well, this is wrong. Wrongwrong, wrongwrongwrong. Squigs have been sighted all over the galaxy, for far longer than Tyranids have been around. So.... no. Well ok then!

As I understand it, the orks are the descendants of the Krorks. These could be the infamous brain boyz, but there are also those who believe that the old ones are the brain boyz. This fluff is very obscure though, to my knowledge. And relax, no one is getting angry. If I was angry, I would have put " "

interesting, I like the down syndrome idea, although in such cases usually the sufferers do not become viable members of the society as having/missing a set of chromosomes do have a huge effect on intellect and disabilities.
how about like a sepcial set of chromosomes determine if you become an ork, grot, snotling or squig? much like sexual chromosomes in humans that determine if they become male or female.
also to redress the question of orks require damp places for the spore to germinate. looking at nature, plants such as cactus can survive by having a waxy coat on the leaves to prevet water loss. orks fungus(personally I'd take the fungus out of the system altogether, just have the algae as the symbiotic organism) can function in the same way.
