<taps foot> Not sure how to reply to this. How about just some general comments?
Psykers and Magic/Psionics
We're not going to change each others opinion on this one. You seem to think that I'm missing the point and I think that you're overtly concerned with the superficial imagery, a feature which is covered by the narrative, but which you feel must necessarily be replicated in the specific mechanics. While I freely admit that mechanics in an RPG can have effect upon the 'style' of the game, I also believe - as do many others - but ultimately it is the narrative that is important.
Comments on the 'duration' of magic are fairly meaningless when one can find examples where psyker effects are 'long term' and, similarly, magical effects which are short term or where duration can be seen as a function of concentration. Again, it's on how you sell it. Creating something new merely for the sake of creating something new, or perhaps of attaching one's name to it, doesn't really have that much of an interest just getting the best working example which doesn't necessarily buy into the shallow 'fluff' revolving around the wargame. I use what I have and, until something better comes along I'll stick with it. I have yet to see an inkling of anything better. Not in the slightest.
The whole Horus thing...
It's fun. Pure and simple "What if?" scenario. There is the accusation that people are 'chopping up and changing' the 'fluff'. Is this any different from any act of historical interpretation?
It is an act of, well, "fun". It is as valid an interpretation of the 'fluff' as any other... While the specific 'story' in question (above) might not be the best, that doesn't mean that it could not be made to work. After all, at least it works with the 'fluff' rather than adds in something and then says "Oh well, erm, yes. It's always been like this" or, even, revises a premise merely for the fact of 'revising' it...
Wouldn't the Primarchs know...? Depends on the amount of damage. While a picture is one of the poorer sources of knowledge, if one of the greater (and most damning) parts of inspiration, the Emperor is normally represented as a 'dessicated corpse'. Unless you happen to believe in making things up from scratch and selling it as 'fact', then unlike Richard Neave you wouldn't generally believe you can recreate 'facial reconstruction'. Hand-wavium at it's best and something that would apply (ish) in this situation.
Enough.
