Bearing in mind that ice extracted from stellar sources is likely to be so filthy that purifying it would probably take more effort than reclaiming vapour from the atmosphere...

I don't see how, melt the ice, boil it off, condense the steam and refreeze it, pure water, what was hard about that

The obvious suggestion is that water is not as pure as you would suggest. In fact, I'm reminded that major sources of ice are often referred to as 'mud balls' in the literature...

As pure as who would suggest , me, I said it wouldn't be that difficult to purify the water not that it was beyond redemption Yes we can And I see what you mean about gravity being a factor, i would like to say i now agree with you Destecado so Glyph why is the gravity so low , from what I can tell Karnak is only moderatly smaller than earth. To be fair i ran the UWP on the H&E and i got similar results for gravity and air pressure. You might want to think about maybe giving it a dense core which should sort out out gravity/pressure inconsistencies. Its also better in tems of mining lots of heavy metals

On The Core: (no, not the movie ;D) I was reading fluff on Mars that said it had a dense, solidified core which allowed for exploitation of its mineral resources, so I was considering it anyways. You suggesting it has cemented my decision. Hopefully that will sort out the gravity inconsistencies, which I still don't understand since they both came from the "set-in-stone" physical characteristics of the planet (air pressure from Atmosphere, gravity from world size).
Ice Mining: Appears to be a wealth of potential ideas here, so full speed ahead! I'll mess with the planetoid belts orbiting the two gas giants in the outer reaches of the system.
Polar bases: What to do, what to do...... Well, they're definitely in ,there has been too many positive reasons suggested for them to exist. So far, the polar bases (not calling them cities, to avoid confusion with the mobile cities) serve several purposes: 1) Population center - source of fresh labor to replace casualties on the job from the Cities. 2)Water storage - like someone, probably Destacado, put forth, the water needs for even one mobile city would be too high for it to carry around its full supply. Giant subterranean cisterns could be placed at the poles, and water airlifted in cargo copters to cities regularly. 3)Repair facilities: Since the planet now has a mere 53-day rotation period, the cities would not be able to stop for repairs for any length of time. Again, large underground caverns for repair jobs could be built here. The mobile cities would still be neccessary since digging a new cavern every time an area is mined out would be prohibitively costly.
4)Go-between for large freighters hauling resources - good, and eliminates the problems assorted with an orbital city. Give the polar bases B or C class starports, to accomandate the huge transports, and the mobiles can have F or G class, to show the small outlets that can only handle tiny ships.
4 1/2) Being the Original mining sites - is uncertain. It kind of defeats the purpose of having the mobile cities. I'd much prefer having the cities do the mining/refining, while the polar bases store the resources for export and conduct repairs.
Can't think of anything else.

Why only 5 of the 15, i would have just named them all but only give say 5 backgrounds as you are doing. But any way here are my 4 suggestions
House Taktul House Kotus House Rhudra House Jan-Tuun

Those work.
And thus, the rebirth of Karnak shall officially begin. School starts in less than 2 weeks, I'll try to finish this by then.

more delays.... I'm focusing on the Atlanteans right now. Don't worry, Karnak will rise again!

S'okay... we're being stalled on a number of, erm, fronts at the moment including the fact that I'm incredibly busy for the next few months (amusingly more busy than just being in PhD deadline). Karnak can wait since it is interesting, adds to the universe and is inclusive of all editions...

Planet Diameter: 7,000 miles (11,200 km) Planet Density: Heavy Core, 1.45 terra World Mass: 0.971 terra World Gravity: 1.269 terra
There you go glyph, heavy core and increased gravity, just cut and paste onto the origional thingie

nice kind of you. Karnak isn't dead, jsut in deep hibernation. I'm re-writing Atlanteans V.6 right now.

Oh I know it isn't dead, i'm just pottering about at the moment looking for loose ends, and the gravity thing was one of those, hope its useful and look forward to seeing the final product, when you get the atlanteans done first of course.

I just had a brainstorm, though I'd pass it on.
Would be a workable solution to model Karnak's government after the British Parliament? The "House of Commons" could consist of elected worker representatives from the various mining cities, and the "House of Lords" could be made up of the most influential managers, as well as the heads of the rich families that hold the "charters" to the planet and its wealth.
I hope no one's beaten me to this idea for their planet, as I have a very useful site for research - Parliament's homepage. ;D

errr I think quite a few worlds are going to have that governmental structure, for a start its the only kind of government i'm familiar with so I know i'll be using it, but it doesn't stop you using it.
