Just because they're spread around the Imperium, doesn't mean that the authority to use them is equally spread. But the important thing is that you approve of an Anargo Callidus Shrine. I doubt that the High Lords of Terra themselves will feature in my stories, so it doesn't really matter who signs the order. My Callidus won't be asking any questions

I could quite readily envisage a Callidus training in the Anargo sector, but I'm not overtly keen on the idea of a 'Shrine' per se. While we know that there is a precedent for the Shrines to be off-Terra (cf. Culexus) I wouldn't want to sugest that the officio assassinorium maintains (officially, that is) 'Shrines' throughout the Imperium. That smacks more of the sleeper concept than anything else. Perhaps put up a poll in OOC to see what people have to say about this? Or even start a thread on Portent since that's turned to s**t at the moment. Kage

Drifting back to the original topic a bit, I'd like to make a suggestion for generating plot for a Vindicare...
Suppose you have an Assassin, and an Inquisitor, both stalking one another round some gigantic 'place', say an abandoned starship or an Underhive, neither knowing the identity of the other...
Gradually they both begin to see that their quarry is not who they thought he was, by the gradually accumulating evidence of each other's skills in evading what they considered to be 'the best in the business'

Right. I'm writing a story, and I figured it might be a good idea to run the concept by you guys before I write it. The idea is that my Callidus assassin character is sent to kill a Confessor on Tryphon. Now, the fluff often gives the impression that assassins only kills dangerous heretics and megalomaniacs, but I figured it would be interesting to kill someone quite innocent, just for the sake of politics. As I'm sure you remember, Tryphon is a world controlled largely by the Ecclessiarchy and their so-called Priesthood of Tryphon. Of course, I imagine that the Imperium, like Kage, isn't entirely comfortable with this situation. The Age of Apostasy has left them all rather touchy about this sort of thing. Now, as I wrote in my SR, the Priesthood of Tryphon has been losing support over the last decades, and anti-Priesthood demonstrations riots have become increasingly common. Hundreds of thousands are sent to jail every year in this increasingly cruel regime, which has led to the rise of the Tryphonian People's Front. BUT... a few years ago, a new Confessor came to town. Speaking with the authority of a Primarch and the conviction of a Saint, this Confessor was able to turn the tide with his charisma, giving the Ecclessiarchy a stronger hold on the world. With this new Confessor starting to put an end to riots and thoughts of coup d'etats, the Imperium now worries that the Priesthood will be able to keep their hold on this world. Which, again, they don't want. So the concept for my story is simple, really. An assassin is sent to kill the Confessor. To not create turbulence with the Ecclessiarchy though, the assassination is meant to look like the work of the Tryphonian People's Front. An act of terrorism. So what do you think? Is it plausible? Remotely interesting? PS: Sojourner, while that idea does have potential as a short, one-off story, I'll personally be focusing on this Callidus character. And I believe the Inquisitor literally wouldn't know what hit him

Definately interesting. Perhaps the "Peoples front" can be made similiar to the russian bolsheviks, red banners and all that stuff. The name just makes me think of them.

I like the concept CELS. If you are looking to do a multiple stroy arch, you could perhaps have the Assassin working for the Confessor under an assumed identity. This after all is not a simple hit, but is suppose to make it look as if it was done by a specific party.
The Assassin therefore can not simply kill the confessor at the first chance available, but must wait for the opportunity to point the blame in the right direction. Perhaps when the time finally comes to kill, the Assassin enters and the confronts the assassin, saying that they know why they are there and that had know from the day the Assissin came to work for him.
Perhaps his death at the hands of a trusted confidant was given to him in a vision. what ever the reason, he tells the assassin to do his / her duty. the death will make him a martyr and will only help to strengthen the failing ecclisiarchy position on the world. His is but a small sacrifice for the greater glory of the Emperor.
The way I see it, you could have the story go two ways from here.
1. The Assassin having grown close to the Confessor (losing the normal professional detatchment) begins to question his / her mission. Perhaps the Assasin goes rogue and attempts to leave the fold. This of course is a typical spy thriller theme.
2. Another thought is that while the Confessor is telling the Assassin that he knows all about the Assassin's mission, he also intimates or blatantly comes out and tells the Assassin that it was not a mission sanctioned by the High Lords.
This may be an opening gambit in an attempted schism or coup within the ecclisiarchy. It may be an attempt to discredit the Assasin temple by having them carry out unauthorized sanctions. Maybe the confessor provides files on 10 other deaths that on the surface appear routine, but to the trained eye of the Assassin show foul play.
In this case what should the Assassin do? What if those that sent him / her are involved? How can he / she investigate these other deaths without drawing undo attention? What is the actual truth behind these deaths and the death of the Confessor?
