In very broad strokes, this planet is a huge smeltery whose population has been driven under the surface by polution.

There, that's a decent overview. I sort of started with the idea of titanic black storm formations underlit by a red glow, and just worked out a theory that could make that cool looking planet picture happen

Atmosphere:
- Was breathable in the distant past, but the forges have now reduced it to a toxic state
Cities:
- Inverse hives
- As the planet's surface became more and more poluted, cities grew down into the crust
- Easy to do with all the caverns from mining
- Plasma "suns" light giant underground caverns
- Having darker skin is a staus symbol
- Poor have extreme palor
- "Snake-oil" merchants sell "darkening" solutions
- Gas-gangers inhabit the surface/upper hives, fighting over scrap and breathable gas
Forges:
- "Fueled" by planetary core taps
- Vent out to the surface, spilling tonnes of carbon, sulfer and other foul stuff
- Give black clouds and weather-systems on surface
- Primary output is adamantium for ?? shipyards? forgeworld?
- Also generates steel, gold, platinum, etc. in smaller amounts.
Labor:
- Penal-workers do nastiest work in segregated "wildcat" areas
- Because of their work, they become extreme agoraphobes
- Regular workers move in after there's enough "room" dug out for "decent" habitation
Access:
- Landing pits of various size/type are the norm
- Freight/Cargo
- On or near surface; usually collapsed mine
- Uncovered, unpressurized
- Personnel must suit to travel to pressure-lock
- Commercial
- Custom dug "silo" (this is the normal standard)

- Various gantries, collars, etc. link to ships
- Personnel may exit without suit, but must work in one

- Deeper is more prestigious, as it means more had to be cleared above it for access
- Pressure doors at some point in silo

Agro-Domes:
- Also lit by plasma suns
- Primary goal is food and O2 production
- A brief visit to a dome is considered a reward
- They have semi-mythic status among the populace
- The very powerful have vacation estates in them
Water:
- Somewhat scarce
- Horded by the government in huge Dune-esque caverns
- Water intensive activities (showers, cleaning, etc.) are accomplished by sonics
- Public fountains, ponds, etc. are regional status symbols
- Defiling them is considered unthinkable
