Ok, time to get back into the project. Well partially anyway, I'd love to read through all the threads to see what progress has been made since I was last active, but I still don't have that much time. However, one of the 'projects' in my course is to work on an outside dynamic website. It's not compulsory, but can give me extra credit, so I thought I'd work on the ol' Anargo site, like I promised to do many moons ago.  From the look of the current site, it's clear that Zark has about 50 times the artistic talent that I do, so I think I'll leave that in his capable hands. (Is he still around?) I'll get to work on the dynamic part, and the first step in that is designing the database. Not sure how much experience anyone here has with databases but I'll throw forward my ideas anyway. I was thinking of 3 tables at the moment, 1 for subsectors, 1 for systems and 1 for planets. I'll start with the planets for now. (Oh, I was going to use this thread to get ideas as to what to include in this table, but CELS's Standard Representation for Worlds seems to include it all. And damn, this is going to be a big table.  Added to those fields will be planet ID (a unique number for each planet) and system ID (showing which system the world is in). If anyone can think of anything else which needs to be added, then let me know. It'll probably take me a week or two, but I'll try to get the database up, and a couple of php pages to add planets and modify them. One problem I currently have is lack of hosting space. I can code and run the site from my computer, however others will only be able to view it when I'm online, and with dialup that isn't too often and quite slow. If anyone knows of a free site host that handles php and mysql, then please let me know. (Actually I remember someone offering temporary web space, I think it was Heretic. Is he still with the project?) |

Zark can still be seen lurking in the shadows from time to time, but he's not really working on the project since the introduction site came up.
I've some very basic experience with databases. Came across them in school, three years ago. I won't be of any help, but at least I know what "tables" are ;D
Should we discuss what to include in the systems and subsectors as well, perhaps? Total population? Capitol? Total number of inhabited worlds?
Heretic isn't with us, I'm afraid, but he might be willing to lend us some webspace, if we (and by we I mean Kage) ask nicely?
Other than that, I seem to recall that zholud has 50 mb of webspace. I dunno if it supports php and mysql though.

I'm in the midst of getting the "Standard Representation" of Anargo Primus up, a document which will then be sent to you, Zoom. And, of course, something posted in the "Anargo" forum. Note however that I say "Anargo Primus" (the name of the star) and not "Anargo Primus Tertius", the long-name for the capital world itself: the standardised representation should include the system details as well, remebering the initial guidelines. I've mentioned this a few times, but thought that I would just put it in the "Example of World Creation", which is what the Anargo system is, and use that by illustration... (Actually I remember someone offering temporary web space, I think it was Heretic. Is he still with the project?) If you take a look in the "PPL" forum you'll see that heretic is currently in charge of doing lots of things for Potent's Oracle, so has little time at the moment. If anything, get to the PPL forum to make your presence known in an administrative sense rather than having to check out the entire forum... Kage |

I'm still lurking around, but to be honest there hasn't been much call for my services since the intro site. I do recall looking up a site which had free space, no ads, and php support etc a while ago, I'll see if I can find it again. EDIT: Found it- www.propercomfy.co.uk/Although I have just noticed that the site hasn't been updated for a while, I don't know if it's still active. |

Right, I was going to write my Methods chapter today but I'll try and get that done tomorrow instead. It's not going to take that long to write... only 5,000 words. :-\ I'll try and get the "Standardised Template" of Anargo finished and we shall, broadly, use that and Proteus ( et al.) as a basis of getting these world tables done and building something up on the website... then you're services are going to be more than required, Zark, since a planet is at a mid-level: there are levels of organisation both above and below this which would have to be put in on a skeletal level to allow subsequent integration... He does, my design skills suck. I always come up with ugly colour combo's and boring designs. Zark, I sent a request for web space to that site you gave the URL for, it looks perfect for us. Here's hoping they accept.  |

Aw, shucks, you make Zark blush  I hope you get that space, seems to be a pretty solid deal. And once the project gets back on track, I'll knock out some templates for Zoom to php-ify. And maybe fix the Thought of the Day to change daily instead of randomly, although we still need 300-odd more entries for that... |

Hi guys, I was wondering if you needed any help writing a dynamic starmap, as that would be so much cooler than a bunch of static image maps. I can code php, aspx and the sql derivatives and I've had experience creating dynamic maps for websites. Also, writing the whole site in php/aspx and having all the pages in a database would make writing a dynamic search engine a breeze and the quote of the day could change on the server daily automatically.

Welcome aboard IronWarpStorm. It'll be good to have another coder onboard. I don't suppose you have web space with mysql/php do you? Or know of a free Web Hoster that does? I haven't had a reply from the one I applied to so I don't think we can count on that one.  |

Yep, how much do you need? I'll probably have to limit it to about 50 megs of memory and about a gig or two of bandwidth per month as I need most of it for research purposes. I'll also need to reserve some memory for an SQL database if you want to use one so we'll need to calculate how big a database we'll be using here. Is there any version of SQL you'd prefer?

Cool.  50 megs of HD space is plenty I'm sure, I think the current plan is we get everything up and running, then if it's up to scratch Kage was going to register a domain and pay for some good webspace (and with a PhD I'm sure he'll be rich enough to pay for that as well as a small salary for each of us  ) Depending on whether we get some artwork uploaded to the server the Bandwidth will be minimal, I'd say 1 gig a month is more then enough. As for what version of SQL, I'm using 4.0.14. It's the only one I've used, so I have no idea how it differs to different versions. So I think I'd be happy with whatever version you currently have, or whatever's easier for you to obtain. |

Ok I've just contacted the guys who run the server my webspace is on, and they can get a MySQL 4.0.18 partition running pretty soon. They're going to charge me for it, but if Kage's going to lay down cash for some dedicated space later on, then I can lay down some now for our test space. (Incidently, I can recommend some good php/sql hosts when the time comes. My web space is mainly dedicated to aspx but it can also support php and mysql. But for a serious php/sql project like this, the permanant server later on should be straight php/mysql.)
I've had a look throught the threads but I'm unable to get a good idea of what stage the website is at. Can I have a brief rundown from a technical point of view?

Before you go paying for anything we should wait to see what Kage says (and for you to make sure you want to use up your own hard earned cash ). It would be a shame to get you to pay for the space, then to find out we can't do anything with it for a month or two. I can currently test code myself on my own computer with IIS, but with dialup it's hard (and slow ) to show it to the rest of the project. As for current site progress, take a look for yourself at www.anargo-sector.tk. Currently no work has been done on the dynamic side, I've been waiting on Kage to finish up the Standard representation for worlds so I can get that table up. It might be best to get info from someone else in the project though, I'm a bit out of the loop at the moment. |
