I am not going to give up yet! ;D
Everything that makes up our existance; the feeling of heat, air in our lungs, our pain receptors they would not have. They might be able to have all those things simulated for them, but in the end what is the point?
Although that was not in my orginal post on this threat it was ment to be.
First off, that's assuming things a tad too much. For example, I doubt that the Necrons have an organic brain. Secondly, if they can transfer the 'mind' in the first place it kind of follows that they would understand how to 'program' it...
'Program' it! how is that transfering? How much would be lost?
Assuming that it is an almost identical copy (since it could not be a full duplicate because its not bilogical) it would be different to the orginal.
This is one of my favourate saying "Form defines function". It works for every speice and I would bet it works for a technological one like the Necrons too.
Just because the mind is similer to the one of their orginal body it is now bound by different rules. It would not be long before their very way of thinking changed.
The first thing they would do is get rid of the pain senses in their body. This is consitant with the fluff because it was part of the existance they wanted to leave behind so badly. Once they did that a whole lot of new traits would stem from this.
Just imagine what you would do if you could not feel pain, or take damage from anything once you were put in this new body. You would not go around just acting like normal; you would see yourselve as elevated above everyone else. Next thing you would know you would be throwing people around people you did not like. Its not like anyone could stop you...
As stupid as this example is it does highlight the fact that the psyche of the Necrons would change and not for the better. It not just physical isollation from other but psychological one too.
They would become detatched from the world around them. Thats why they don't care about the billions of creatures they have let their gods consume; they are above it.
It seems to me that you're buying into the image and letting that shade your arguments, which is fair enough. At present I cannot see a reason to agree with you on this front, though.
Perhaps but it is consitant to me. I tend to think in a multi-Faceted way, making intuituve leaps of logic. I don't need to see the bits inbetween to know it all works; its an instinct.
To me the eqastion;
New form = world view change = Moral change = New being
works.
To me I can see this new being as the Necrons of the GW fluff. A few thousand/Million years of existance would advance this even futher. Any normal person would borderline psycotic after that, which is why they would eventully turn of any sensations they did have left. A thousand years of bumping your head on a dangrously low cealing would for example precipertae switching off the feeling in your body along with those pesky pain recepters. They would just get bored of it.
After all it would not do much for your rep as a great and powerful being if you found it uncomfatble to walk across the rubble of building if all those sharp edges are causing funny feelings in your feet. ;D
One final point; however you dress it up they are machines. Machines need rules, structure that how they react to this. Biological orginisuims don't. The brain for instance is a chaotic collections of nurons firing about, when creating their new form the Necrons would make this more structured so it works within the confines of technology. It is in that they would lose something of themselves. Thats also why feelings would not have the intensity they used to. THey are confind and controlled.
Look at the current state of computer software technology when used with robotic arms. They calculate angles and presure to exert and all that to work. Humans don't. We don't stand their thinking "I need to hold this with 1 Gram of presure per square centimeter" before we do it, it is just a reaction to the strenght of the material that we make up our minds on how we hold it. While the necrons might very well do that their would undoubly be some sub program working on the equation that does tally things up in exact numbers. Its the very nature of the machine.
